Sporty Spice

I wasn't allowed to buy branded sportswear when I was a teenager.  We're talking early early teens here when I was trying to convince the mothership to buy me some Nikes for P.E. as opposed to forcing me into plain black plimsolls.  Never got them.  Oh well.  Fortunately she was completely fine with me raiding vintage stores early on even if she didn't understand why I wanted clothes that smelt a little iffy.  That's basically how I bypassed sportswear brands.  It wasn't really a matter of choice.

However, I am a quarter of a century old now.  I can damn well buy sportswear as I damn well please and I'm proud to say that since my tumble, I've been living in my Marios sweatpants/trackie bottoms which I got at Shop 172 on impulse.  Yes, that's right, I've found a new kind of comfort wear that is as close to Juicy Couture and as sporty as it gets.  It's the same pair of fluoro yellow trackie bottoms that I wore in New York which everytime I said were by Marios, people got confused and thought Marios Schwab had suddenly ventured into sportswear.  Nope – Marios is an Italian-based brand, made up of Marios Loisou and Leszek Chmielewski, which makes the kind of clothes with sportwear leanings/features that I'm more than happy to inject into the wardrobe in the hope that I might balance out with other elements, because sadly I look a little lost as a sporty spice wannabe… blame the lack of sportswear in my life when I was growing up. Zippers, knitted mesh, bomber jackets… elements of the 90s that I wouldn't mind keeping for the time being… make up the A/W 09 collection as well as sweaters and outerwear cut in different proportions.  Now…just need to fulfill my tweenage desire with those Liberty print dunks…. if I can track them down…

  1. that reminds me, when the hell is their e-commerce site gonna be up and running? i remember posting a coming soon post about it back in october. oh well…i love all those marios pieces!!

  2. Oh! Oh! I love this kind of sportswear. In a way it feels like a natural progression from Clare McCardell all those decades ago…On a practical note, those capes would be perfect for cycling around New York! LLGxx

  3. Everything looks so cosy. Like swaddling. I went through an unfortunately sportswear/Sporty Spice phase. I distinctly remember one of my NY resolutions was to dress more like Sporty Spice. The shame.

  4. Amazing cuts, especially with the heavy jersey like the first pieces. I’d love to add a piece of Marios to my wardrobe, just can’t find information on the site where to buy? Online shops anybody?

  5. These are so brilliant, love how sportwear nowadays isn’t just the simplest tanktop where all its does is absorb sweat. Ballet/dance stores are great too for quirkywear 😀

  6. Oh gosh, these pieces are gorgeous. All that drape and those zippers…
I remember in elementary school my sister trying to convince my mother she NEEDED Nike sneakers…she never did win that argument.

  7. Marios is a really interesting brand, and you’re right *nobody* has ever heard of it (but that kind of adds to the appeal). The only places I’ve ever seen it sold are Shop 172 and Extra Fein in Berlin.
Love your yellow trackies, but I think it’s an offense to them to even mention the words Juicy Couture in the same sentence!

  8. I really like them. And I LOVE that picture of you – it sent me on a search for my own highlighter toned track pants! LOL.
And Juicy would never make anything that looked remotely like Marios

  9. i like how you always look so casual and cool in your photos, this one is one of my favorites. such a light and airy smile =)

  10. i swear oak used to stock this brand. at least i think it’s the right marios.
i got a blue cardigan from them a while ago and the color was so disappointing when i got it since oak loves to jack up their images but i loved the shape too much to return it. their clothes definitely drape beautifully

  11. girl me too, i had to BEG my mom for nikes in middle school, I didnt understand it, but I’m glad it worked out that way, it sparked the uniqueness don’t you think??

  12. I bought a Marios dress from a store in Melbourne last year. It’s an unnatural combination of a zip up hoody and a canvas skirt. It makes me feel like I’ve worn my doona out, the perfect hangover outfit.

  13. Such amazing pieces!!! I love your yellow trackies, especially with those Marni wedges!
I’ve always loved sportswear, and am so glad that instead of the school uniform I see here (blazer, tie, knee-hi socks, hats, skirts), growing up in Brazil, my uniform were navy Adidas tracksuits with a white tee (school logo) and sneakers…How perfect is that? 🙂
    xx

  14. I love Marios Left Tanker. One of my friends works in the Tokyo store, and it is one of my favourite stores in Tokyo, which says A LOT as Tokyo as the best shops, but Marios is that little bit better, if you know what I mean.

  15. Nice streetwear design. I’d wear this anytime! Alas the bulkiness of the silhouette will probably consume my height anyway…

  16. hello! Your blog is so amazing. Stop by birds eye view if you’d like. I love the yellow trackie bottoms. And the deconstructed pieces are amazing!

  17. incase you didn’t know: the liberty dunks have dropped in all Nike sportwear locations in NY! it dropped on sat, so if you know anyone in NY the they can mst prob find them easily for you! if you cant find them in london!

  18. Now THATS the way sportwear should be worn! Susie, you’re coolness is blowing my mind. This picture is gorgeous… and now I have a mad hankering for some trackie bottoms
