The Sartorialist’s position as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Design Influencers definitely can’t be disputed and the reactions that his pictures provoke ranging from the intelligently critical to downright offensive show that he is capturing more than just ‘an outfit’ in his photos and that he brings something more to the table. His influence has now led to a wonderful blog like Wear Palettes, by a Swiss graphic design student Daniel. He has created a blog dedicated to constructing palettes based on the photographs from The Sartorialist and has also uploaded his palettes onto the colour-obsessed site COLOURlovers. Thus far, Daniel has created over 1,500 palettes and going through the archives, you get a different perspective on the outfit you might have first viewed on the Sart.
A simple thing like deriving a colour palette from the outfit adds a complexity because some of the palettes are not simple at all and in fact the colours look like a clash collision, yet transplanted into the outfit, it all makes sense and so you end up wanting to give that person mad props for the deceptively easy task of getting dressed and you also want to commend Scott Schuman for picking out that person’s super sartorial skills and photographing them.
Oh, then jealousy ensues and it gets a slightly ugly but then inspiration comes and you start having fun with your own very inferior photographs and picking out the colours of the outfit (a simple Paint programme will do the job…). Had to do a rather complex palette seeing as there were a gazillion badges and a torid floral skirt involved…
I agree that the Sartorialist is a fantastic site and extremely inspiring in many ways. The fashion and styles captured are always amazing. Colour is everything whether it’s little or lots. Tights are great for experimenting colour with. Colourful tights can turn an otherwise samey outfit into a wonder piece, or patterned tights can help to create an individual look. Even a pair of black opaques can turn a boring outfit into a classic chic ensemble!

I am always amazed at how creative people can be. I love that this guy has taken inspiration from one blog and turned it into a creative enterprise of his own rather than merely thinking, Ah! I can do the same thing, only better.

I agree the Sart is amazing; I never go a day without looking for wonderful worldly inspiration. BTW your black cardigan and fabulous shirt look great on you. When I first scrolled down I only saw the top half of you, and thought wow that’s pretty demure, and then I kept scrolling down and saw the fierceness!!!!

my problem with color is that i get to matchy matchy and rigid in my color pallete. it wish i could be more free. it doesn’t help being a designer, and having a designer bf.

I organize my clothes by color, so as a result it’s easy for me to see which colors I have more or less of. Until recently, most of my stuff was deep in neutral territory, with some blue and purple added in. With the helpful support of my best friend, I just recently started venturing into pinks, greens, yellows, and corals — and I’m in love.
