Bed Bird Head

Lazy bum that I am, without even investigating Beddug Wyn Humphreys further after seeing her contribution to Hannah Marshall ‚Äòs AW08-9 lookbook, a reader helpfully sent me the link(note to self: must improve Googling skills or perhaps there was a typo in the lookbook…) and now I‚Äôm intent on dressing my head with birds to of course re-enact scenes from Disney‚Äôs Fantasia, the Pastoral Symphony portion where pretty centaurettes prance around with birds fluttering around them. Ok, can‚Äôt really replicate the lower half of a horse‚Äôs body but Disney birds I can do with Buddug‚Äôs head bands. Buddug Wyn Humphreys hails from Snowdonia in North Wales and there is much to say about how her background has influenced her work. Her various collections of jewellery are concerned with using unusual materials and unique finishing but it‚Äôs the birds that I‚Äôm after. This is the sort of taxidermy effect which is just a step up from my feather obsession

The black crow is the one I‚Äôm immediately drawn to just because it would be fun to confuse people with a black bird and veiled pillbox hat on my head…. sadly, it isn‚Äôt available on the e-shop so I must email Buddug pronto!

The coloured birds are getting more to that Disney Fantasia territory….

The white doves on rings and hair slides are a subtler approach but of course the rings must be combined with a kissing bird headband (the ones with two birds)!

  1. Oh, wow, these are incredible! I’m very much a bird (and a headband!) person, so feathers, birds — I’m all for it! What an amazing find.

  2. i love this girls work, she used to have a stall in spitalfields market with her friend Jessie Chorley who is also a jewellery and trinket maker. I think they might have a small shop in dalston now.

  3. i love your thought of a bird and a hat, especially if it were a crow with a little black veil too so people would think you were straight from a tim burton movie! although i have a feeling at first people would think a pigeon had landed on your head and try to swat it off!

  4. Notice the difference between the cheerful, pastoral quality of the “Fantasia” birds and then the rural morbidity of the black crow. Fascinating!
SB, I tried to mail you, but got kicked in the butt by your spam filter.

  5. i have been making bird headbands for the past ten years!!!

  6. These are tres tremendous! And I’m pretty sure this is the same person I snapped up a ring from in Broadway Market a few months back, so worth heading down and checking out methinks 🙂

  7. Good call on the black bird, that one is my favorite out of the lot. A bit eerie and dark, but also whimsical once a passerby figures out what it is.

  8. I’ve got a growing collection of Beddug’s bird headbands, hair clips and brooches, and did a recent post on Jessie Chorley, who shares a market stall with her at Broadway Market. Such good stuff. Nice post. xx

  9. Something Carrie Bradshaw would wear & she would pull it off brilliantly. I would look like an incredible idiot wearing a bird on my head. If you can pull it off – They are really pretty. Wish I was more adventurous!

  10. I wore a fake bird in my hair once and got made fun of, but these ones are so much prettier than the one I made. I especially want one of those rings!

  11. My friend would FREAK if I ever wore those. She had a bird poop on her when she was wearing a tank top (it was pretty nasty), and she runs for all birds! It’s an interesting look though.

  12. oh birdies!!! i’m not sure about the extra big-sized ones though..they will lose their cuteness vibe and then it will seem as if you’ve visited the taxodermists and that would be tragic///

  13. Oh I adore this post!
I love romantic looks and in my opinion this look is so romantic. I can picture in my head girls running in a field with lovely dresses and the bird hairbands in their heads! Its so, so lovely.
Ok! I admit I dont imagine myself wearing those on my head, except for the rings that I could wear all the time, but I find the look fantastic.
Thank you Susie for letting us know about this looks!
