Ulla and I both share a love of paper cut-outs. Except she’s got super skills and can make her own paper cut-outs and I’m just a dumb admirer who can only say ‘Oh…that’s so pretty/cool!’. So I’ll just sit back and gush a little over Cut-It-Out, a new line of printed jersey pieces by Yelena Konovalova who trained in art in St. Petersburg and ended up as fashion director for Catherine Malandrino.
There doesn’t seem to be an end to the appeal of easy basics like t-shirts, hoodies, leggings that are adorned creatively/humourously with labels like David David and House of Holland prospering because of this. Konovaloca has drawn inspiration from her Russian roots for her first collection with Russian folk-art, pagan fairy tales decorating the basics, aiming to tell some sort of a convuluted tale. I love how the prints all look like they’re laughing at me (in a good way…). I feel like if I wore any of this, I’d have to have a permanent cheesy grin on my face whilst skipping along drinking vanilla milkshake.
If ppl are still after scarves of the Balenciaga A07-8-ilk (for a collection that I was only luke-warm about I sure do mention it a lot…. odd indeedy…) Cut-It-Out offer three different shapes (The Tie, Turn, Wrap Around scarves) ripe for fringe/coin/tassel attaching to make something not of the norm. It’s all available to buy online now which is a good move for a new label that hasn’t secured stockists yet.

How very Robert Ryan. I liking the guys clothes better.
^^^ I AM liking…long day
This reminds me of Angel D’Amico’s designs on Etsy. See this awesome shirt for an example:

It’s based on Wycinanki, the art of Polish papercutting.
I’ve often been tempted to take one of those paper cut-outs and use them as a fabric stencil — apply some spray glue, smooth onto a shirt or other article of clothing, spray paint over, rip off cutout — and voila! but alas I’ve been too lazy.
OH I LOVE THESE!!!! My mind is spinnin with ideas. Enough of this ‘dumb’ stuff! Get some scissors out and try it girl! I bet you could do some wonderful ‘fashion magazine’ paper cuts! I DARE YOU!!!
