My initial disgust and sheer disappointed at the H&M’s 2007 designer collaboration with Roberto Cavalli hasn’t yet placated despite a blog pointing out that the collection is not as odious as one might think, after seeing some sneak peak fitting pictures and the ad campaign. I’m yet to be convinced but if anything is going to have me towing in line with the pro-Cavalli-H&M pack, then it’s these illustrations by Swedish illustrator Liselotte Watkins as showcased on the H&M Roberto Cavalli blog (yes, they have their own blog that actually isn’t all about saying ‘Hey, these clothes are super great – buy them!’).
It’s the sleeker corset dresses, slightly Matador-esque jackets and fem-masc ruffle shirts that are doing it for me and when illustrated in such a striking way by Watkins, I can’t really carry on spouting off ‘Urgh’ remarks at the collection. Still, the power lies in the clothes in real life and come November 8th, I’m (guessing) that I’ll be there at the flagship H&M on Oxford Circus to make the routine video and to inspect the goods myself.
If those beady eyes of the illustrations look familiar, you might also recognise Liselotte’s work from her recent collaboration with Miuccia Prada on the Miu Miu SS08 collection where several pieces bore the work of Watkins, with the multi-coloured Harlequin tunic standing out. (Coincidence that Topshop has just had a multicoloured diamond clutch shipped in? Me thinks not…).
Very strange pictures fashion. Not my favorite to say the least >_<. Thanks for the post though!
Roberto Cavalli’s clothes aren’t really anything to write home about in real life, so I can’t imagine that the H&M line will be any different. These illustrations are great, though.
yeah, except we know they wont look that cute in person.
I love the illustrations. Maybe they should sell those instead of clothes. I don’t dislike Cavalli’s clothes so very much. In fact, I have a Cavalli dress that I think is quite nice but now I’m scared to ever show it because people hate him so much! :-O
Hi! The second illustration is so beautiful, the outfit is amazing and elegant… I love your blog, check mine sometimes!
Greetings from Martirio’s Way
Isn’t that the problem with so many clothes? They look better on paper or models than real people? Or perhaps the designer and artist just finds better subjects to wear them than ordinary folks…
i’ve already seen the entire collection as my friend does the PR for H&M. i managed to view the press samples in her office 2 weeks ago.
speaking as one who does not like Cavalli, i think the H&M range of clothes are not too bad; they are easier, more wearable adaptations of his style. the price points are fairly good and there are some cute leopard print chiffon tops, like the ones tom ford did in his early YSL collection some years back.
the workmanship of the clothes don’t seem too bad either.
I was feeling a little YAWN about this collection. In a way, I kind of hope it’s not any good, because it will be yet another H&M collection that I won’t be able to get my hands on..
but at least its not a celebrity “designer” collection, if I hear of another of those any time soon, I..well, I don’t even know what I’ll do.
Sadly, I don’t think they’ll be dying down anytime soon.
Cavalli has always striked me as being the Jordan of fashion, but I have to agree with you that these pictures are very intriguing. I expected a lot more leopard skin and cleavage!
xx
Stevie…there is a ton of leopard skin… check out the H&M blog…. this is probably the best of a bad bunch…
k: We shall see….
Every fashion drawing has its own characteristic and it depicts the artitist’s emotions. Those drawings are very sombre looking… But they are details like the ruffles and ton on the shirt. The faces of the models even have a very lustrous expression. I kinda like it!
i didnt get the appeal of her illustrations, certainly not on those mui mui dresses and shirts. there’s something about them that turns me off, maybe it’s the amateur ‘stiffness’ that made her style and the fact that they are digitally drawn.
cavallis ss08 collection was quite nice
Oh thank you thank you! I’m a huge fan.
