I was devastated when my LCD flat screen was smashed into a gazillion pieces when it fell off the wall (unwise decsion to leave balcony door open during gusty winds…). I’ll admit it. If it wasn’t for that unpleasant incident, I’d be a complete homebody what with the blogging and the TV couch-potatoing. If my shiny TV was still there, I’d also be signing up for one of these new designer Sky HD boxes in typical predictable tech-addict fashion.
What’s not to like? Crystal sharp image quality and vibrant colour, Dolby Digital sound, all the joys of Sky + (a bit like Tivo…recording, rewinding programmes etc…) and of course, the choice of these designer boxes. Sky have previously collaborated with designers before on their boxes but I think they’ve chosen an interesting roster of designers this time to get Sky HD box happy:
Basso & Brooke – A little bit cheeky funny for B&B. I would have preferred their AW07-8 pixelated prints or even those Turner paintings.
Giles Deacon – Really wicked design actually. Reminds me of Fernand L√©ger’s mechanical paintings.
Preen – Simple and unfussy. It would probably be the one I’d choose as my rooms is disgustingly cluttered.
Gareth Pugh – A signature ‘Pugh’ kind of design me thinks.
Jonathan Saunders – Interesting print and I think it’s a return to his ‘patterned’ roots as his current collections is a lot more structural.
I’m all for designers doing side projects like these to a) raise their profile through a big lifestyle brand and b) use the dough to fund their work. I’m just lamenting my shattered LCD TV (a million smithereens on my carpet…a tragic sight…).

I was put off the idea after that yawwwn Cath Kidson one, but these are fantastic.
I’d go for the B&B one I think, it’s something that I wouldn’t usually go for a very girly. But then the Jonathan S one os calling my name.
…Oh no…
I Like the Preen one best…I wish we had something like this in the States!!!
I’m all for designers lending their skills to projects like this as well and the results in this case are generally excellent. However I think this kind of project detracts slightly from the purpose of design with electrical goods. To make them work better not just look better
yes, the deacon DOES look like l√©ger…
and amazing that you gave my great great uncle ferdinand some love in yr blog.
I like the Jonathan Saunders.
