Setting the mind free with socks

So I did say I was down for Prada AW07-8 arms and legs and off to Prada I totted yesterday to acquire some legs (er…not actual legs… the leg-warmers/footless socks).  Ok, so if you REALLY think about it, the same effect can be achieved with some knee-length socks and some scissors but at ¬£40 a pop for the wool ones (¬£60 for the silk ones) in a plethora of colour combinations, let’s just say that sheer laziness and immediate post-pay day is at play here.  The thing about any of the colour combinations of the socks is that because there is that element of randomness about them, it bounces back onto the outfits you’d wear with them.  For me, where I would have tried SOME semblance of colour co-ordination, instead, the socks impelled me to try all kinds of different things.  It’s like ‘Ack, red and brown aren’t really supposed to go together….might as well clash a few more with them….’.  So I did the primary colour thing, the matchy-matchy thing, the two tone, the same tonal values and the mixed all-sorts.  A dull afternoon spent colour swatching with the socks is immensely satisfying.

Red satin shirt, As Know as De Base green skirt, vintage green snakeskin slingbacks, grey wool beanie // Uniqlo blue polo shirt, vintage purple vest w/ circular pleats, yellow skinny belt, AA yellow headband, As Know as De Base green skirt, Topshop purple moc-croc slingbacks

Julien Dossena for 1,2,3 navy oversized pullover, vintage plum satin dress w/ velvet hem, Office navy suede lace-ups, navy beret // Vintage blue lycra dress, Uniqlo scarlet long sleeved top, H&M yellow ribbed tights, blue patent flats

Roland Mouret olive textured top, Sophia Kokosalaki for Topshop brick puffball skirt, vintage red belt, Yves Saint Laurent taupe platforms // Whistles purple cardigan, yellow ruffled tunic, vintage blue sweatshirt skirt, Tabio purple tights, Faith brown brocade wedges

  1. I REALLY like them! They’re understated but striking at the same time. Plus some days choosing between stockings and leggings is way too hard!
I think I may have to ease into it before being brave and going straight for a bold pair!

  2. Susie, hopefully this will forwarn a lot of store buyers….I looked last Christmas for my daughter for any kind of legging or footless socks and all anyone had was black. I was told they just didn’t know how in demand they were going to be. I think this look is fantastic and it’s going to be a good year for the hoisery departments! Let’s hope they are prepared for it.

  3. I love the colour combinations – much more interesting than black footless tights!

  6. I am loving the mix of bold colors and how you have styled these outfits. It didn’t really like this Prada collection, but I am starting to warm up to it.
the top left photo is definitely my favorite.

  7. Oh, I really like the last and the second outfit. It’s fun to play around with socks like that. I do it myself when I’m bored one sunday afternoon.

  8. Wasn’t the mustard top part of one of the outfits you wore to Fashion Week? And I loved the look of the footless socks, they’re perfect for stopping annoying things chafing your heel.

  9. I don’t think I could afford to splurge on prada socks…but I’ve been wanting to splurge on these marjan pejoski owl socks I saw!
Love the 2nd to last outfit

  10. I’m a particular fan of the first and third outfits. I love how the colors first struck me as fall, but with all your color playing and the playfulness of the socks themselves, they work perfectly for the remaining hint of summer.
I’m also a fan of your stirrup-like way of wearing cutoff socks and long leggings.

  11. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! Formerly ambivalent about them, now I want a pair. Esp. love the outfit with the Koko puffball skirt and red belt: beautiful. You’ve got such a fantastic eye.

  13. Hey Sussie, just wanted to thank you for freeing me from all the old ideas of color-matching stuff! They are really driving me mad sometime. And now I’m just gonna try let the bright colours fly in my wardrobe 🙂 your outfit brights up my day! xxx

  14. Fab fab! I dislike it when people have preconceived notions of what colors go together, or what you’re ‘allowed’ to do. Thanks for your vivacious color joy; it’s wonderful!

  17. The first circle of Hell isn’t really all that bad of a place, seeing as how most of its residents ended up there more through bad luck than bad choices.
