Topshop does Turbans

Thanks for the early tip-off from Catwalk Queen, I surfed on over to Topshop and found exactly what I predicted would happen – turbans in the style of Prada SS07 in spitting image colours.  Yup, it’s safe to say that you can scoff at Topshop’s claims that they don’t take inspiration directly from the catwalk.  If you wore these, anyone who vaguely is aware of what is going on in fashion would do a Prada-Point with their finger.  Since I have done a wee dip into the turban pool, and despite the risk of having people do the Prada-Point on me, I faltered and impulsively bought the grey one.  It’s the one colour that these turbans don’t come in at Prada and probably the one colour I’d get the most wear out of.  I know what you’re thinking – ‘Susie, you victim!’, but I promise come Tuesday when it arrives, I shall take the turban and pair it with something as far away from Prada SS07 as it comes and perhaps even take it to a new level for AW0708.  I’ll just keep repeating the mantra ‘Remember Susie, turbans aren’t just for spring summer 2007, they’re for life….’ or some such similar drivel.

Speaking of Prada, I have just noticed their website has had a bit of a revamp with some nifty drop down menus where as before it was a bit of a blank shell.  On the site is a wonderful PDF download full of beautiful images of the SS07.  I don’t mean the ad campaign or just plain catwalk pictures.  I mean purposeful photographs and montages taking us into the mind of Miuccia.  Where were her influences drawn from?  What was the context of the collection?  The answers to those questions seem to lie in that PDF.  I just hope there is a similar download for the AW07-08 collection, which I’m yet to fully grasp.

  1. I wondered how long it would take TS to get those bloody things in. They had the headband version a wee while ago, obviously testing the waters first to see if anyone would bite, before getting the full-on ones in. I guess people bit. Sorry Sus, you couldn’t pay me money to wear one – but you’ll put your own wee slant on it and hopefully make it look less cleaner-like.

  2. I’m with you on the ‘what’s that all about?’ AW Prada collection. Check out Sophia Kokosolaki’s website too for some cool trippy graphics!

  3. I agree with DJM, what took TopShop so long? When I was in London, I got a metallic silver turban from H&M. (The one from the Kylie ads.) I know, 2 trends in one. I couldn’t resist because no one in beachy southern California (or at least in my community) is going to be wearing one this early on.

  4. I adore those photoshopped Prada images from the PDF…I’ve had at least 5 seperate ones as my desktop background over the last few months.
Though I must agree with you re: the fall collection. Either I don’t get it or it’s just plain ugly. I’m thinking perhaps the latter…

  5. Summmer almost over? It doesn’t officially start until 21rst June…we have only had a handul of summer-y days in the UK.

  6. Ok I must admit, I’m obsessed with Turbans, and since Prada one’s are so expensive I would buy one from Topshop, but unfortunately there’s not Topshop stores in Portugal 🙁
But I have plenty of scarves and use them as hairbands and turbans 🙂

  7. When I found those turbans I couldn’t really see them working with any of my outfits, but I did think “I bet Susie Bubble can”. I look forward to the pics!

  8. While there was once a time when about 90% of my respect for designers rested in Miuccia’s lamp, her much heralded turbans and recent collections have turned me off to everything Prada. Miuccia got the idea for those photos from a Sarah Moon spread in Vogue circa 1979, the SS collection relied a little too heavily on Lana Turner and the Codex Seraphanianus, and the AW collection was similarly ripped from Calvino/Serafini. Her designs are no longer the esoteric ecstasies they once were. The PDF only reinforced my belief that Miuccia’s getting a bit too literal for me.
