I feel a touch sorry for the accessories featured in this editorial ‘Paper Plates’, shot by Lachlan Bailey from the latest issue of UK Vogue. Lovely accessories they maybe, but they were completely eclipsed, at least from my perspective, by the fantastic garments constructed from a variety of papers and cardboards. Paper garments are of course nothing new but the effort that stylist Charlotte Stockdale and her team of CSM students put into manipulating paper as though it were fabric has to be highly commendeded. Bustier dresses made out of paper rope. Knife pleated paper fanning out in a skirt. Khadi pulp voluminous skirt. Waxed paper woven jackets. Tissue paper scalloped mini skirt. Crepe flowers. With the difficulties of working with the material, I can only imagine there was some painful construction work involved but at the same time, it all sounds like a big school craft project, one that you get incessantly obsessed about and can’t seem to put down. With experimentations of different/unconventional fabrics appearing on the catwalk more and more (that PE stuff being a prime example), I believe that one day we will all be lusting after paper garments as right now I’m craving that stiff sort of stand-away quality that seems to automatically create architectural feats in clothes.

omg! that is crazy!
oh my god…. it’s a dream….amazing
No kidding – accessories? where? Love the spatial quality and almost Issey Miyake feel of the work! Wow!
I love your blog! I was reading through your posts and I’m celebrating my 1 year blogger anniversary in March, too! Do you want to trade links?
hello! i’m from tFS. i really love this editorial myself. i was wondering what you meant by PE material that’s all over the catwalk? Do you mean all the fabrics used for sports… the thin nylon taffeta, etc. Sounds interesting.
It would be great if this made its way more into the mainstream fashion. I heard it’s a big trend in furniture because of its hypo-allergenic properties and also because paper doesn’t attract pests.
