Maggie Delight

When I first saw this US Marie Claire September cover, I had to do a double take because a) I couldn’t believe it was a Marie Claire cover and b) Maggie Gyllenhaal looks so delightfully bewitching on it.  To be honest, if I scratch my head, I find it hard to name even five Hollywood starlets I actually genuinely like but Maggie Gyllenhaal is most definitely one of them, foremost for her acting talent.  She’s not conventionally beautiful but yet there’s a charm about her that’s memorable.  I have always thought there’s a silent movie actress look in her eyes and this editorial just confirms that.  I love the way they have referenced that period and have really played up on Maggie Gyllenhall’s ability to evoke a little bit of Clara Bow.

These pics actually inspired me to start looking for some ‘easy’ black pieces and some sort of coquettish black hat to go with it.  By ‘easy’ I mean loose, unstructured black in heavy jersey or velvet.  Paired with some chunky shoes and some snappy gloves, it’s most definitely a surprising look for the daytime.

Furla hat £32, Peachoo Layered Dress w/ Tape Detailing £75, Zero Maria Cornejo Black Velvet Keyhole Dress $509, Black Nylon Matte Finish Gloves $11.99, Schuh Pure Pipe Slingbacks £49.99, Gerbe Back Seam Fatal Tights £14.95, Vintage Damask Satin Hat $50, Graham & Spencer Habotai Dress $242, Office Constance Black Platforms £65.99

  1. Yay, I love Maggie Gyllenhaal. I agree she isn’t particulary pretty but she does have a very likable face and there’s just something that draws me to here. I think it has something to do with her unpretentiousness, but I can’t exactly put my finger on it. Anyway, she’s just very lovable to me.
“What I think is appealing about shopping is putting something on and asking, ‘Is this me?’ Which is another way of asking, ‘Who am I?”
I completely agree. Very happy that someone translated that thought into words for me.

  2. I luv that pair of tights~but it’s so expensive ~i bet i would just rip it after a night out~ >.<

  3. I think Maggie looks great on the cover, but I didn’t think the rest of the photos were too flattering for her. I haven’t had a chance to read the article, but I will now.

  4. Oh now you have done it — I have to buy that Marie Claire. I’m not a fan of many of the actresses of her age, but she’s definately got “it”.

  5. I felt the same way you did when I saw the cover. I was mesmerized. Of course I love vitnage so anything remotely retro in a fashion mag makes me giddy.
I loved the styling so much, that I bought a pair of vintage black leather golves on eBay. Not opera length, because that would be just ridiculous to wear in the real world.
    I loved this spread.
