The Unravelling of the Gold Dress Part One

So allow me to introduce you to what looks like a Cyndi Lauper stage costume.  It’s this gold dress made out of the shinest, most garish lame you can find, not unlike the wrappers of Werther’s Original toffees.  I found it in a charity store and like some sort of intrigued magpie, I just bought it for £2 thinking there was some way I could utilise the dress.  Thus, it begins, the chopping and changing of the dress into lord knows what.  I aim to get at least 5 rejuvinated garments/accessories out of it – in other words, making that £2 go all the way!

For my first gold lame dress project, I took a baby step and just used the sleeves.  I did say I was going to try and make it last!  I got an old H&M grey tank top and sewed some black lining sleeves on it to form a base.  Then I took the gold lame sleeves and sort of wrapped it around the black sleeves and did some random pinning and tucking both on the edge of the tank and on the black lining to create some Grace Jones-esque huge shoulders.  I’m not entirely sure why I was thinking of Grace Jones when I was sewing the sleeves but there you go.  Now I have a gigging top to go and see Metric on Thursday.

  1. hi susie:) and i was wondering when you were going to do another diy project because i absolutely love your ideas:) you have such a creative mind. really, did u ever consider doing anything in the fashion business professionally..u r really good, really inventive.. a free spirit of fashion!
do more diys with the gold fabric!!! i cant wait to see what u ll come up with:) hm..and u also inspired me to do some things too:)

  2. If you make the golden dress a little shorter and dress it down with black tights and black shoes, you will look beyond fabulous! A bit like Sienna Miller (yikes!) and her Burberry dress at the CFDA awards, which I honestly adored.

  3. Woops, of course I mean the Costume Institute Gala, not CFDA Awards.

  4. ooh. you just reminded me i need to buy some gold lame, pleat it and… yeah.
now i know what to do with my scrap!
you rock! i love your syle diary too.

  5. Love the sleeves thing, very cute. Have fun at Metric, they are completely awesome in every single way.

  6. Uno problemo – the waist is too teensy for me and the bust too baggy. Ah well…. all the better for me to play with all that material…

  7. Very, very cool top. You’ll easily stand out, in the best way possible, from the sea of greys and knits in this top.
