Cabling Up

>> If you thought that cream cable knit jumper that made me all calm and collected at Jil Sander in Milan was going to stay cream, you had another thing coming.  Granted, this isn't me having a mad rebellious moment given that in any vintage shop in London, you can beget yourself many a cream cable knit jumper and so an easy replacement can be find.  I had been meaning to try dabbing paint onto the raised relief of a cable knit ever since seeing it in the last issue of Centrefold magazine – see below.  Stealing Joanna Schlenzka's styling trick was a real doddle.  A jar of Dylon fabric paint, a brush and half an hour listening/watching Masterchef (who else is against the new BRUTAL format of the show?) was all it took.  Pink was the natural choice for me but I'm also into the idea of pale blue against a navy knit, grey on cream, white on beige etc etc… the list goes on and I've already had a few peeps asking me to dab some paint on a jumper for them.  Err… ok… a five year old could do it but hey, I'll waste a few hours, wiling them away to the soundtrack of ferocious chopping and Greg Wallace's yum yum noises…

Yesterday the jumper managed not to stain anyone else's clothing and also got a random remark from Stefano Tonchi saying that I had dressed to match a raspberry macaroon.  Yes!  That was TOTALLY my intention to dress up like a baked good as a potent reminder throughout the day that if I don't have time to grab a bite, I can eat myself…

Cable

In other cable news, Pollini, under the new direction of Nicholas Kirkwood has got back on course with its own collections concentrating on shoes and accessories and the new A/W 11-12 collection has this amazing cable knit printed suede that graces platform peep-toes, brogues, ankle boots and a shoulder bag/clutch hybrid.  Should I ever own any of these cable knit printed shoes, I promise not a drop of paint will go near them!

  1. Great work on the jumper! Looks delicious. I’m knitting a sea green one for myself at the moment, but I might have to give up in frustration.

  7. That is a great experiment with the cable-knit. Im seeing it further embellished with lots of bright pink and beige beads too!!! you could just keep adding and adding to that jumper until its unrecognisable!! x

  8. you do look like a raspberry macaroon! This can only be a compliment. The idea of painting your jumper is genius. Might have to try it myself, although i doubt i would be able to execute it so well.

  9. if you’re worried about the paint rubbing off or transferring, i recommend heat setting it with an iron. i work at a hand-painted fabric studio and everything we make is heat set! it’ll save you any worry!

  10. Looks amazing, heading out now to look for a jumper! By the looks of the other comments, you’ve just started a painted jumper trend! The unfinished-ness of the paint on the jumper is awesome too, makes it haute as opposed to playschool.

  11. Did you say the words ‘cable knit printed suede’ that is my dream??
And I love what you have done to that jumper, I want to know how to do that metallic looking effect, I purchased the Whistle jumper that replicated this, just paint? Yes I havent got a clue when it comes to designing even mere customising! x

  12. The print is genius! If I had the moolah, I’d buy every item with the print! Even if I can’t walk in heels that height! They just look fabulous!

  13. That pink cable effect is perfect. It makes me bonkers. Somehow raises my ire. Like, now I want your job. I want your job! Ha. I’m gonna go make something nice now.
