Not Just For Weekdays

The grass is always whiter on the Scandinavian side – meaning a layer of snow has settled here in Stockholm and white grass for me means getting jacked up on girly shopping energy in stores like Monki and Weekday.  Much to the bemusement of Stockholmites/Soderfolk, me getting so excited about what is considered staple Stockholm fashion fare, probably seems like the uncoolest thing to their perfectly styled n' composed selves (the stereotype still pervades regarding Stockholm-cool I'm afraid…).

That wasn't going to stop me from getting my Weekday fix and in particular, the collaborations which seem to go out of their way to stepping outside of comfort zones.  Sure, they could do the obvious and go for Swedish stable designers (which they do as well…) but for one of their recent collaboration projects, they chose three Antwerp Academy 2010 fourth year graduates to work with on mini collections that are in store now.  It's funny how fashion graduate names come back to you, making you feel all the more grateful that you saw the seeds of their work in the first instance.  Mariel Manuel, Matthieu Thouvenot and C√©dric Jacquemyn were plucked from this year's crop of Antwerp graduates to collaborate with Weekday and gave me a dilemma picking out the pieces to take home with me…

Mariel Manuel goes 'Deep Into the Woods' for her mini collection which features flamingoes (clearly these woods are slightly mythical…), well-judged use of tree bark-like faux fur and…

…what looks to be a wolf and a wildcat bleeding from a powder pink shirt.  Exactly the sort of thing that I go for so that I can say to my mum "Hey!  It sort of looks like trickles of blood are coming out from my nipples but really it's the animals on my shirt that are feeling the pain…"  As you do…

Matthieu Thouvenot has played with the 'chi-chi' conontations of tweed, gold buttons and leather in his collection which features a Chanel-riff-off jacket with slashed tweed sleeves that nearly went home with me.

Instead, I went for a pleasingly good-to-touch wooden egg necklace with a tapestry needle attached to it…symbols that I have no desire to read into…

Guys can continue on C√©dric Jacquemyn's journey to Icelandic landscapes with his mini-collection for Weekday.  Interesting designer collabs for dudes are short in numbers so I'm definitely all for more of this ilk, especially if it stops the other half from using that counterproductive line "Girls have it so much better…" to which I can reply with a flurry of backchatting…

Weekday still excels at working with homegrown talent and Diana Orving's collaborative collection is also in stores at the moment.  Leggings with an extra sheer mesh of draping of course had to go on the homeleg journey.  I hear Bless is also on the Weekday collaboration cards.  Motion for a Weekday international-shipping e-store?  Aye aye…

(P.S. My own photos here appear to have turned back time to Style Bubble 2006-7-era.  Refinery 29 is perfectly right.  I owe EVERYTHING to my beloved 'photo bitch' aka Style Salvage Steve.)

  1. I love Mariel’s blouse, in a gruesome way. It reminds me of ace graffiti chap, Kid Acne (who I believed had a brief foray into knitwear design?)
But some great designs here… why is that Scandinavia can do design oh so well?

  2. hey susie! there is a WEEKDAY give-away on my blog.
they gave me the tweed-jacket as well – try your luck if you want to 🙂

  3. Surprisingly, the menswear is my favorite…except maybe for that necklace. It is great to learn about new designers, thanks for the post!

  4. Haha, that Refinery29 article was kind of spot on but not 100%. If I could even go into Weekday I would be a happy camper. The Stockholm cool kids must exist: they wear great cuts and make it look like it is the boring old uniform of their country. I could wax poetic about their laissez-faire attitude towards dress….

  5. I love that they’ve opted to collaborate with recent fashion design graduates. These are the ones who need initial support to let their creative light shine and they are often producing the most inspiring stuff.

  6. suzie! do they have online shopping? i will die if i don’t have that bloody animal blouse!

  7. I love your site, it inspires me every day, and my knowledge to open new horizons.thank you very much for each publication, I feel the love for what you do.I wish you the best in your life !

  8. often in your ears Qinghuan your name and you always call me baby, you see that mischievous look, from time to time to Sajiao, like a child, like I jumped into the arms!
