It’s Time for Ken

>> I'm thinking of a few things really when I see these images from a full-on Ken shoot in the current August issue of Esquire UK (to celebrate Ken's appearance in Toy Story 3)

… Hurrah for Ken in his solo shoot given that he always seems to play the role of side-lined, maligned steady boyfriend who does nothing but support the crazed ventures of Barbie in all her transformations over the years…

…Does this full on Burberry Prorsum outfit of shearling overcoat, grey cotton utility shirt, black wool pants and black leather boots come at the 1/6th of the price given that the scaling of doll:human is about 1:6…

…Does Ken sweat because he looks mightily wrapped up here?…

…Did Ken REALLY say "‚ÄúEach designer was highly sensitive to my masculinity.  Quality design really suits me!‚Äù  If he did… that's a big laugh-out-loud thumbs up from me.

…Dang, spoke too soon.  Barbie, looking distinctly like Dusty Springfield does feature in the shoot.  Could this be why Ken looks like he's contemplating suicide ("I just can't take it any longer that you have all the attention,
Barbie!") or are they simply admiring the view from the top (figuratively and literally…)

… Oh, and ditto for these Prada outfits re: pricing and in particular of course, the Prada camo coat that bee-hived Barbie is wearing?…

  1. I recently found an old barbie sized camera and then staged a ‘barbie shoot’ complete with the photographer in the pictures. It’s surprisingly fun.. Love the photos you posted here, certainly brings new meaning to ‘good things come in small packages.’
I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, and have noticed numerous references to two of my favourite things – the guardian and ‘spaced’. Glad to see someone else with these interests! I think I enjoy the guardian more than my parents.

  2. I was equally happy to see more inclusion of Ken and Barbie in Toy Story 3. Personally, I like that crazy beehive headdress in the second picture.

  3. Having photographed and styled several shoots with Ken I can say it is important to take his masculinity seriously. In my experience he is apt to tear his shirt off to prove his is indeed man-ish.

  4. I can barely take in the two photos you have posted, because Ken’s little fashion show in Toy Story 3 has invaded my mind.
