For The Dissolute

It's testament to the stunning impact of young photographer/filmmaker Ellen Rogers' images that she has a section on her website where bloggers, Tumblr-peeps, Flickr-ers and any other internet image miners can download 'Bloggable' images – i.e. in the right dimensions and ready and ripe for uploading through any means.  I first noticed Rogers' work through working at Dazed and in particular it was her film 'Switch' that completely captivated me.  Or at least made me incredibly intrigued as to who this girl was and where were her references being dug out from.  You might also have seen her work recently in i-D where she has formed a particularly conducive partnership with stylist Matthew Josephs.

Anyhow, her meticulously maintained website speaks for itself and the dark glory of her images are further enhanced by the fact that they are all taken on film and entirely manipulated through darkroom techniques (no Photoshop allowed!) – she makes her own chemicals, has a play and also uses up to 40 different cameras to get the varying effects of her images.

What I wanted to say though, isn't Old.News. to those aforementioned imagists who are probably ardent fans of Rogers' work already.  Rogers has teamed up with artist Prizme to create a side project The Dissolution.  From the starting point of a collaborative short film (trailer above), a booklet of Rogers' photographs as well as a CD soundtrack of music and a fold-out poster are also created to go with the film.  Below are some of the stills and accompanying imagery for The Dissolution.  I'm not sure where this collaborative effort will go or whether it serves any purpose other than to be an ambitious and beautifully conceived marking of a collaboration but it's definitely an interesting strand to Rogers does in addition to her growing fashion portfolio.

Oh and if Ellen Rogers' website hasn't fallen into your path, please do be prepared to do a lot of downloading from the Bloggable section.  For some reason, a title of a track from The Piano soundtrack springs to mind… "The mood that passes through you…"

  2. My heart was pounding out of my chest. I love that sensation- when you see true beauty. Not in terms of visual asthetics- no one can say it was a “pretty” film but it was so beautiful. An odd emotional connection to such a simple piece.
