Sorcha Gives Good Stilts

>> I'm keepin' it short for the next few days whilst I'm in New York as I'm trying to work through a mammoth task…

So as soon as I landed, whilst I was waiting to be let off the plane (if you're on Twitter, you might know that my flight was under some weird security threat so we weren't allowed off for an age…), I called Steve as he had attended the Central Saint Martins BA show on my behalf… more intrepid replacement reporting… he wasn't able to get good pics but he did mention something about models walking out on stilts as the finale collection.  Alright here we go… the 'theatrical' collection that finishes up the show… we're on familiar ground here.  Show theatrics employed in student shows is no big deal but I'm more concerned with whether they actually add any meaning to the collection and of course in some cases, theatrics can be a ruse to distract your eyes from the clothes…

I feel a bit cheap and dirty researching about fresh CSM BA grads on Google as I normally do get to speak to them in person.  Timing is not on my side this year with regards to student shows alas…

That said, I did find that a) Milly McMahon of i-D did a really cute interview with Sorcha last year, giving a bit more insight into her work and the girl herself b) one of my favourite photographers Saga Sig has done her lookbook for this graduate BA collection.  The images reveal a lot more about Sorcha's intentions with her layers of candy floss ruffled knitwear covering the models on stilts.  The towering tiers of texture reminded me of elements of traditional Mexican dress and then I found out they were partly inspired by costumes worn at the festival of the dead, making candy pink and red roses take on a weird contrasting meaning.  The main inspiration is apparently the film The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind where the distorted memories is reflected in the warped scale (hence the stilts…) of the pieces…

Apologies for all the regurgitation but without some thorough in-person delving into, all I can say is that Sorcha's on my hit list when I get back to London…
