GFW 2010: Dragon Eye

>> Some graduates go the whole hog with their collections and make their own shoes, some modify existing shoes and some just buy them in as is.  Fair dos.  Some collections don't need matching shoes to complete the overall look but when the students do go to town with their shoes, the effect is pretty sublime.  Anna Lee from De Montford (so many amazing textile-effected collections from this school…) won the Zandra Rhodes Catwalk Textiles prize last night at the GFW Gala and rightly so considering how complete her collections was down to the velvet printed shoes which matched the flowing tunics printed with Chinese dragons.  Aha… a motif I have a weird love hate relationship with that motif that on so many occasion looks ever so slightly cheesy on a cheap souvenir and embroidered jeans and denim jackets.  Anna managed to renew my love for the mighty dragon by using velvet as her chosen base.  Somehow the cheese factor is reduced…

Get down to the velvet-shorn feet where the prints looks so seamlessly incorporated into the ensembles and it's no wonder the collection bagged the textiles award…

P.S. Because I missed the first day of GFW, effectively I'll be covering the collections a wee bit later than everyone else.  Sorry about that but I promise I'm being as selective as possible – blame it on the number of gemtastic graduates that were on show…

  1. Love this collection! Gorgeous shoes.
    Check out my blog everyone!!!

  2. What about the necklaces?! Why no mention of them? I’m a big fan of giant figural necklaces & those are about the most awesome I’ve seen.

  3. Nicky Frye: Actually, I didn’t like the necklaces so much… gold dragons… too many memories of craptastic Chinese New York decorations…

  4. Also.. do you know of any website showing all the graduate collections? some uni’s images are frustratingly hard to get hold of, and fuk.co.uk doesn’t seem to have covered gfw as it used to.
would much a appreciate a reply if you have one.
