Mirror Mirror…

>> I'm a little bit behind as this has been going on for half a day but I'm keeping one eye on proceedings in London with the help of belated emailing and Twitter.  So some of you may know about my wee little pet peeve about style advice.  Ack… where to begin with the problems with the mere terminology of that phrasing.  Where to begin with the problems of ME giving style advice.  I am all for style encouragement though and I learn that early on when I would post outfits in the WAYWT (WhatAreYouWearingToday) thread on The Fashion Spot and it was all civil, encouraging and inspiring (this later of course evolved into the Lookbook, Chictopia type sites…).

So it is with this attitude that I approach taking part in Topshop's Mirror Mirror project in collaboration with SHOWstudio to celebrate the drop of Topshop's make-up range.  I've pasted the flyer above but basically, it's a far more evolved version of those crappy toy mirrors where you press a button that declares you're butt ugly/drop dead gorgeous.  Actually, when I say evolved, I mean it's a MILLION times better.  Now I haven't seen this in person, but from what I gather, on the ground floor of the Oxford Street branch, you get a make-over from the make-up team, stand in front of the mirror, have your photo taken and numerous fashion stylists, personalities and editors will comment on the outfit, which pops up on the mirror.  I predict many a squeal when said comment comes up.  Hopefully there are no tears.

Actually I highly doubt anybody will rip a look apart.  This isn't Go Fug Yourself afterall.  Instead, like I said, it's style encouragement of the highest order… especially when the list of contributors includes people like Nicola Formichetti (he's on in twenty minutes!), Karen Langley and Katie Shillingford from Dazed & Confused, Leith Clark of Lula, Victoria Young of Love Magazine, Edward Enninful as well as luminaries like Julie Verhoeven and Fred Butler.  A full schedule can be found here and yes, there's love to bloggers such as the lovely Shini of Park and Cube and myself.  The gallery on the project site is being constantly updated too…

I'll be commenting on looks from 11am-12pm this Saturday.  Though I'm not actually behind the mirror.  I'm watching people on stream.  In Sydney.  Woooooaaaah, that sort of freaks my mind out that I'm able to even take part in something like this.  That was a Bill and Ted "Woooooaaah!" by the way…

Another thing I haven't seen in person is the actual make-up itself, for which this project is centred around.  I've had a gander around the colours, I'm glad to say that it is fun focused as opposed to being a 'serious' make-up brand.  I can imagine gals going mad at this stuff kind of like I had a teenage binging problem with Spectacular nail polish.  I'm thinking some copper and navy streaks across and under the eyes are in order when I return…

  1. I think the make up looks worth a look, cheap enough for a fun experiment! and Spectacular – beloved of goths and indie kids alike, you take me back ( cue Wayne’s World style wiggley arms)

  2. The mirrormirror concept seems really bizarre, like some kind of dream that someone is repeating to you over breakfast.
I really like the look of the metallic kohl pens, I’m a terrible sucker for packaging.

  3. I’m actually having a binging problem with nail polish and I ordered two from the new Topshop line early this morning…the colors looks great online.

  4. cool philosophy… Topshop have impressed with this one… not sure what the aim is though, it is still Topshop’s knocked off looks from the catwalk compiled in a hideous way after all with ZERO attention to sustainable production. Cue the violin.

  5. I think that this is a great move by Topshop. There’s nothing better than being complimented by such fashion experts haha.

  6. I’m sure having you rate the outfit would be fun, but the only time I can make it to the store now is when Bryanboy’s on duty… My fashion-bitch-radar is telling me to steer clear!
