**EDIT** Added this pic of Wyman Wong, Hilary Tsui, Cristo Lo (from Swarovski) and myself at the dinner… I look like an awkward pale pink giant for some reason…

I knew I was out of touch with Hong Kong when I sat down for the Rodarte x Maggie Cheung Joyce dinner across from a woman who told me she liked my blog and happened to own a boutique in Causeway Bay and so all thoughout dinner, she was basically Hilary, woman who owned a cool store, wearing a pretty Rodarte dress and super cool and nice etc etc.  Except she happens to be Hilary Tsui, a former actress, wife of Eason Chan and basically a HK style icon.  Doh!  And I thought I was a semi clever-clogs for knowing who Wyman Wong was, the fashion journalist/radio DJ/lyricist also sitting next to me.  Clearly, my HK magazine intake has slowed right down since moving away from my parents so a lot of these things are waaaay above my head.

Still, none of this really matters because the fact remains that super nice Hilary has a super nice store to which I dropped by for a bit of exploration.  I'm starting to understand that Hong Kong's more interesting spots are either a little out of the way or not on the ground floor which of course is down to the skyscraper culture that HK is built upon.  The name of the store Liger already boded well.  How can you NOT love Napoleon Dynamite's favourite hybrid animal?  So up the stairs I went to Liger and found that Hilary, together with stylist Dorothy Hui (they both have very awesome outfit blogs on the store's website) have curated a really well-selected and well-edited one-pit stop of hard-to-find designers in HK.  The more familiar names aren't ones that are widely stocked in HK which is what marks Liger out but of course to us, the list reads as a fairly stable under-the-radar-yet-established roster; Pleasure Principle, Anntian, Reality Studio, Barbara i Gongini, Maria Francesca Pepe, Swagga and Soul (apparently Hilary picked them up through the blog!).

For me, it was a revelation in terms of seeing labels from Hong Kong and Japan.  In particular, I've always banged on about Japanese labels not being the most accessible web-wise – sadly no high res jpgs or PDF lookbooks – so seeing vaguely familiar names in the flesh was a bonus for me at Liger…

First up the locals to look up in the future… Creature de Keis and Obese Plein… both specialising in casuals with a twist, the sort that a lot of HK labels seem to have fine-tuned really well…

IMG_1589 IMG_1587

Nozomi Ishiguro is one of those names that like I said, vaguely know but have never come across in person… clearly Ishiguro isn't over the Givenchy-esque studs but they do work brilliant in this Doc Martens collaboration…

… and on a detachable lapel…

IMG_1611 IMG_1593

I was more intrigued by the Nozomi Ishiguro clothes like these 'chap' type legwarmers…

IMG_1596

I *think* I saw Nude: Masahiko Maruyama before in Paris but again, it's another vague recollection that got jolted by these thin leather harnesses…

IMG_1628 IMG_1629

Yeah Right! is a Japanese label that adds a pretty interesting slant to the whole reclaimed vintage clothing thing.  This particular salvaged denim/trench combo nearly made me go home and rip up my mum's Burberry trench but it has 'entrenched' a pretty piss-easy DIY idea into my head…

IMG_1624

Always great to see KTZ out and about there… though their e-store is pretty expansive now…

IMG_1619 IMG_1620

Johanna Ho is probably one of the more well-known designers to come out from Hong Kong and though Liger didn't have any of her own collections in stock at the moment, there was a collaborative dress between Johanna, Hilary and Dorothy here…

IMG_1631 IMG_1632

It's rare that I see Petar Petrov's womenswear (or menswear come to think of it…) in stores in London so it was great to see it in Liger…. I love all the nude/peachy tones in this collection…

IMG_1602 IMG_1603

Liger's selection spans across the Pacific too over to NYC label Sea, which I hadn't heard of before… the inside out printed jumpsuit surprisingly works…

A bit of feathered/studded Literature Noir

Of course, not everyone is going to be trekking it out to HK to drop by Liger but within their brand list is a treasure trove ripe for keeping tabs on future collections, which in itself is reward enough…

I picked up a Creature de Keis tee that will temporarily fulfills my distinct lack of white t-shirts and stops me from stealing the other half's tees…

  5. You go looking for Petar Petrov menswear? πŸ˜€ I’m not sure why his line does modestly, but the quality isn’t really that great, actually it’s pretty poor considering the price. Carola’s line has a luxe sportswear similarity and the quality is much better. Incidentally, Kris’s S/S 10 is just fucking amazing!!! Masataka Matsumara for Giuliano Fujiwara is THE line for A/W 10! That’s all menswear, sorry gals! Cool looking store…

  6. I think Liger’s positioning and the price marking is surprisingly affordable. It’s definitely not as high as Lane Crawford nor Joyce. Its just in the high-end price line. I think the best of Liger is really the selection of the high-end pieces but as exclusive as the high fashion brand pieces. And thats why I think Liger should stick into that location (Pak Sha Road) and remain their exclusivity… Add oil Hilary!!

  7. i like Wyman! his column which writes about fashion is very interesting! it makes you laugh out all the time.

  8. Wow, the store looks amazing! (and so do your Finsks!)
Just a thing, maybe I’m confused here but unless you’re speaking of someone else, Petar Petrov isn’t a japanese Designer but a bulgarian working in Vienna, Austria.
One of the few good sample sale actions we’ve got going on here.. πŸ˜‰

  9. Katherine: ARGH! Typepad did something weird with my URLs…. meant to put the label Yeah Right! there…. argh! So annoying!

  10. this is awesome! I haven’t been back to hong kong in a few years but it’s getting me excited to go shopping next time I go back to visit the family!

  11. Wow Susie, I wouldn’t have known she was Eason Chan’s wife either…love Eason, too bad I can’t afford to see him in concert.
Love the tee, the trews and those wedges. I practically live in Causeway bay when I’m in HK, so I’m deffo going to make a stop there when I go back for a visit next October! I know you aren’t the most familiar with HK shopping spots like you are with London, but how about a mini list of places you’d suggest?

  12. I love the fact that you’ve been to HK, now when I go for my honeymoon next year I’ll be able to scour through your archives for shopping tips…keep them coming!!!

  13. Suzy!! I am loving this frequent posting!!
I wish i was able to find these places when I was in Hong Kong – Did you happen to pass by On Pedder?
When i was in tokyo I was told by the shop assistant that Nozomi Ishiguro used to work for quite a number of years at CDG before leaving to start his own label!

  14. eek sorry for the spelling error!! I’m such a dork! I have a close friend who is spelt suzy!

  15. what a fantastic boutique in HK – i’ll have to add that to my list of stops when i finally make my way over there for a shopping/eating vacation! πŸ™‚
