We Want War

When I saw These New Puritans' new video for single We Want War (who HASN'T seen it… click PLAY… !!!), I was thinking that the dangerously intricate helmet/mask that Jack Barnett is welding in the opening sequence looked strangely familiar.  Then when I found out the directors' name, it all made complete sense… of course the video and styling is the work of the Askill brothers… aka Jordan Askill and Daniel Askill.  Not least that the song is thumpingly good (cannot wait to see them perform their new album in January!) but the very selective styling which is pared down in some ways, ornate in others (err…see mask…) goes hand in hand with the languid movement directed by the Askill brothers… does  help though that TNPS members also happen to look like they slot right into a Dior Homme/Yves Saint Laurent fashion short… (some of you might remember their soundtrack for the Dior Homme 2007 show…)

Horse
I'm betting that this image of Jordan Askill's sculpture of a troop of horses will ring a bell given that it's probably his best known work to date.  The other sculptural feat seen in the These New Puritans video was also on display as part of the Fashion East Man installations back in September at London Fashion Week…I of course stupidly didn't realise that it was actually a wearable object until seeing Jack don it with such grace.  Look a little closer and ye shall see the outline of HeMan's battlecat helmet painstakingly created with white resin…

I also need to give high praise to the shoe and hair acoutrements that Askill created for Meadham Kirchhoff's S/S 10 show.  The metallic resin bird are seemingly weighting down the black patent brogues as well as looking like they might take flight because of the delicate looking wings…

  1. Thanks for visiting my blog! Personally, I really liked the black ones that look like light rays emanating from one eye. But then I always love anything impractical…

  2. Thumpingly good indeed. It’s nice to see unconventional fashion used in music to enhance an atmosphere rather than to create spectacle for a relentlessly attention-seeking artist, for a change.

  3. ooh… i haven’t seen it.
but that’s either because i’m generally behind things like this, or because it hasn’t made its way around Vancouver yet.
    very mesmerizing.

  4. This video is incredibly intoxicating!! The music, images & costumes are all sublime! Interesting to learn that it was directed/styled by the Askill Brothers – it really does feel like a fashion video. Thanks for sharing!
