Sandra Backlund's in that middle stage of a young designer where she's had a ton of press and the name rings a vaguely familiar bell with those immersed in fashion yet she's not a household name yet due to a lack of stockists and (shows). For S/S 10, Sandra wasn't keen on doing press appointments as she wanted to concentrate on selling her second collection that is again made with Maglificio Miles in Italy. The use of machine knitting combined with her particular techniques of building up the knits by hand is making it possible for her to sit in stores and for plebs like me to pick up her pieces with a tangible tag (sadly probably an intangible price for me but hey, at least it's an alive piece as opposed to a knitted installation). I haven't been told WHICH shops as it's TBC but it looks to be a pretty impressive list.
So I'm incredibly happy for her and I do believe that next season she will come into her own, what with A/W season being more suited to knitwear and she will most probably perfect the balance between the ablity to sell and her own sensibilities as a truly unique knitwear designer. Her S/S 10 collection is suitably small, with a mixture of tops, dresses and even a swimsuit (ok, a poseur swimsuit…).
The spiked knits has given way to a layered pleat detail that looks like sqaure shaped scales.
The fine yarns gives this knitted puffy dress and top an interesting texture…
There is also some familiar overlapping and interconnected shapes that comes from Sandra's knitting collage signature…
I'll be eager to see which shop I can finally venture to, to do some heavy knit petting.
Oh my! Those last 2 pieces in particular = spectacular!
Love the textures, & brilliant construction! Amazing garments!!!
xx
The grey dress is yummy!
I can’t believe how detailed her sweaters are! I think she has a bright future in the world of design. I’d love to see how that charcoal sweater dress looks on.
I love the body suit and the two grey dresses! So beautiful it kinda reminds me of Alaia.
What an amazing designer. I just checked out her other collections and they are absolutely stunning!

ugh…too cerebral! she needs to take a leaf from Ohne Titel’s book.
I can imagine you rocking these, Susie. Perhaps at that beach at your boyfriend’s place. Haha

I can’t believe how textured her sweaters are! I think she has a bright future in the world of design too. This is my new angora sweater, (http://www.shop.com/Openfront+Sweater-128671457-p+.xhtml) from Spiegel. I need to find an occasion to wear it.
Happy shopping,
Melissa K.
The white pieces in this collection remind me of fluffy, fluffy clouds. Whimsical pretty-ness. Love.

I do agree it is hard at first to adapt and the outputs are more a/w in terms of texture.
I think she has a marvellous talent and need to learn to deliver s/s knitwear in weight as well a colour.
I’d love a beautifully constructed garment and would love something exciting for spring summer.
Her talent astonishes me every time I read about her.
LOVE the pleating and meticulous intricacies of this collection. Extraordinary, beautiful pieces that display the devotion and expertise of her talent. That white sweater (second before last), KILLED me. I am now typing from the afterlife…

is prbly my favorite :]
Sandra Backlund’s stuff always gets me so excited! I must admit, I’m finding it difficult to adjust to her use of finer yarns (I loved her chunky, sculptural stuff possibly a bit too much!) but she has done really well with it. She still manages to make very sculptural pieces, even on a machine. For a handknit freak like me, I find that very impressive!
I really hope she gets huge. Shes extremely talented. I still notice women have a much harder time gaining coverage, getting the gigs at big luxury houses and so on. She deserves all the accolades and then some.
this is genius!
Her clothes sure is stunning! I haven’t seen anything new from her i a while, so I’m glad I got to see this. I especially like the white jacket with all the pleating. Gorgeous!

this last dress is absolutely perfect! i really cant wait to see where she gets stocked, it’s been so frustrating looking at so many nice things and not being able to buy them!
I love the white short sleeved jacket. The knit is so detailed!
