At last I can indulge on a singular post on my other passion in life… FOOOOOOD! As you can physically see, I'm clearly no waif and if you follow me on Twitter, then you'll also see that my whole life seems to revolve around food. When am I next eating? Where am I eating? What is it? Who's cooking it? What's going into my food? What visceral joy am I going to get out of the meal? All fundamental questions that I ponder on a daily basis… with probably a little too much thought going into them than necessary.
Unlike the wonderful Luxirare who has made food and fashion her blog premise, I sadly have to lock it all up, like a sad chubby kid in a cupboard binging on Mars bars and McCoys. I was grateful that the organisers of my Amsterdam trip combined my two loves in one lunch that means *gasp* I can let the fat kid out of the cupboard… that fashion bloggers eat, enjoy food immensely and can be extraordinarily geeky about what they're eating. I know, shocking isn't it?
De Culinaire Werkplaats is a a cooking studio/workshop/gallery located near the AIFW fashion week venue. They don't work with meat/fish not because they're a vegetarian restaurant but because they want to get the most out of the non-meat produce that they use. They cook according to themes such as 'black' or 'flowers' and so change the menu regularly. The owner is also a baker who makes 'emotion bread'… bread for funerals/births etc… sadly I didn't get to try a chunk of it to see whether I was feeling anything particularly significant.
Anyhow for fashion week, they have created a menu especially for the occasion and have been experimenting with edible fabrics to make installtions for the restaurant. So we entered and immediately I went on a camera frenzy snapping everything and anything… fruit gelatine-based fabrics form neckpieces, dresses over chicken wire and dried fruit/vegetables make earrings, rings and bracelets. They're even constructing an edible wedding dress this weekend that will be eaten in a communal feast. Anybody going to that needs to Flickr that one up pronto!
For a very reasonable sum of EUR20, got get a special five course menu just for the duration of AIFW… we had… and I'm rolling this menu-style…
Coupe Voile – Blueberries in champagne jelly with a voile of blackberries.
*****
Button Up – Mini button flatbreads and pesto with red roses.
*****
Contemporary Quilt – Pasta with three different fillings.
*****
Flower Pattern – Fresh salad with violets.
*****
Summer Colours 2010 – Surprising combinations with dark brown (chocolate).
I literally snapped, ate and enjoyed it all quite slowly as all the flavours really popped in the mouth. Jay Rayner I'm not, so alas my food reviewing skills aren't going to get a full work out here. Food porn pics will do the talking. All I can say is that I left visually and physically sated.
Wow what a creative idea!
so artsy!

Well, you know I think fashion & food go together perfectly! I used to often be the only editor reaching for a canapβΒ© at NY fashion dos.
I’m actually feeling as though I’ve been writing a little TOO much about food of late…LLGxx
food porn, indeed. all right, now i’m hungry.
I am simply in love with this place you have featured. ….
I do believe this pairing of food and fashion has always made sense, as both mediums prove to be extremely trend driven and ideas don’t seem to last long between them.
Thanks for this Susie! Looking forward to more food posts in the future I hope….

Susie, I love your blog dearly and read it religiously…but “clearly no waif”?
I sincerely hope you’re joking, as you’re currently skinny to the point of it being scary, as in people should be concerned about your health…if anything, dear, you need to gain weight!!! Well, if you don’t want to do that, fine, but please don’t think you have to LOSE any, oh my god!!!
This is ultimate coolness! What an original and creative idea! Thank you for sharing π

You’re making me so hungry, Susie! I love it when fashion bloggers write about food, for some reason.

that is just so interesting.
i’m a total foodie myself but i just don’t know about edible fabrics.
reminds me too much of edible underwear, haha.

Sounds delicious though I have to admit that the edible fabrics do freak me out a little. There’s something very…..gory about a couple of them. Still very very cool though.
