The Stark Treatment

I've been keeping an eye on Mykromag's activities ever since I found Sonny Groo outside my building (he was waiting to interview JW Anderson who happens to live below me…) and he told me about his online magazine and blog that is strictly black and white and very VERY edited.  It is a sterile haven for those that like clean cut graphic treatments (errr…unlike this mess of a blog…).  However, it's the subjects that Mykromag picks that impresses me.  They've given Emilio de la Morena's A/W 09 collection the Mykromag treatment with Sonny doing the styling and photography by Paul Scala.  This is a collection with juicy Starburst colours – red, yellow and purple.  However, when stripped back to black and white, suddenly the sculptural qualities that Emilio has always carried through in his work are far more apparent.  The curves around the shoulders are more pronounced and the giant bead detailing jumps out too.  The new issue of Mykromag also features the wonderful Iris Van Herpen, who I'm so excited about because she's showing in London this season, Tommy Ton of Jak and Jil  (managed to slip him into the new issue of Dazed this month…) and Titipon Chitsantisook (a 2008 finalist of Hyeres…).

  1. THOSE COATS! Ah! NEED! Love these sculptural designs, and the shoes in the penultimate last pic are gorgeous! Look like bootie versions of my Stella’s…wonder if they are…

  2. ooooh black and white photos. Lush lush lush!
The hair/make-up is kind of the 80’s. (And I’ve just watched the 80s episode of The Supersizers Eat…, couldn’t stop thinking about Sue Perkin’s outfit)

  3. Wow, nothing goes with hotpants like the top half of a robot suit from a 1950’s sci-fi movie.
I’m serious, I effing love it.

  4. The jacket in the third pic reminds me of this vintage Krizia jacket that I spotted on Ebay:

I don’t think I could pull this off, but I can kinda imagine you in this Susie …

  5. This is pretty neat. As much as I love colours, it’s cool to see how the clothes themselves can stand alone in b&w photography.
