Whilst the Hogg drama was playing out in the comment boxes of that post which I think I will have to close off soon because Typepad is doing something funny, I was at the Central Saint Martins BA show, both the 3pm and the 7pm slot, sitting next to Sarah Mower and er…struggling to think of something clever/witty to say to her…

Forty students trooped out with their BA collections and there were notable stand-outs…Dan Quinn, Caroline Jarvis, Blandine Bardeau… but the one that really slayed and stayed in the brain was Eunkyung Kim.  I seem to have a thing for designers who complete the magic craft circle that I was always too ill-equipped to finish off.  My childhood paper marbling attempts were shot to hell and turned up instead on Josh Goot's A/W 09 prints as utter perfection.  Tie dying that murdered the bathroom tiles and grouting is made masterful and wondrous by Shabd Simon-Alexander.  Random paper fan pleats that I tried to Pritt stick together to make a waistcoat ended in shambles (mainly because Pritt Stick doesn't ACTUALLY do any sticking…) results in Kim's BA collection that she says is "young, fun and kitschy".  It is young and fun but in my eyes, hugely engrossing in its construction and less kitschy than the bright colours suggest.  The way things interlock and over lap, the control of the fabric and how it's pulled tightly in some places and left to drape in others in addition to the colour contrasts… it's just all mind boggling in a good way.

  2. Kim’s designs are really innovative, I don’t think I’ve seen anything like them before. I find them slightly overwhelming, but having said that I can picture you wearing one of these pieces in a heartbeat and pulling it off.

  10. I agree that they’re innovative, yet bizarre and overwhelming. Beautiful color combos, though. I can appreciate them on an artistic level.
    The designer probably offers more wearable versions, as designers usually do, off the runway.

    after you’ve read it and had a chance to check out her link I hope you’ll feel better. Your figure is wonderful! And if Katherine Heigl and Penelope Cruz have to have their sides tucked in — I thought their figures looked great in the untouched version. But sometimes people forget what real humans are shaped like.
    anyway – lots of rambling – hope it makes sense and that it lifts your spirits as that is the full intention!

  19. The inventive nature of the pieces is inspired but the actually aesthetics leaves something to be desired. I just feel like most of them come off pretty unattractive–which is too bad since I love avant-garde stuff. I do think it’s good when a student pushes boundaries and steps outside of the norm, but there is still something in these pieces that is missing for me in terms of being pleasing to the eye. One gal’s opinion.

  23. Now THAT is inspirational! It’s exciting to see someone design in a new direction: using references to the past, but thinking outside the box. And it’s clear: this is hard to construct. It’s not just young & fun: these bright colours are actually quite sophisticated. Kim is onto something fabulous.

    This story will live on in blogging history. And for what it’s worth, coming from someone who is just built thin, I don’t particularly see (as they’re going on about in that post) that you’re any less twigletty than Peaches. Not that it’s a virtue, being a twig!

  24. i love fabric, folds, and texture. even if they did not use all these colors the pieces would still be amazing! but the palette is gorgeous as well!
