There's a stable roster of names that I will do repeat posts on regarding their new collections which might be a bit of a bore but that's the way it goes. I especially can't help it when it comes to Mattijs van Bergen, a CSM graduate that I've followed from his student collection and it's his pleat work in garments and jewellery that makes me particularly diehard about his work. So from last season's metallic draping, I find a A/W 09 collection entitled "Blanco" that gets to the core of van Bergen's signature. Made of mostly calico, a material used for initial toiles, the collection is for van Bergen a re-enacted revisit to why he loved fashion in the first place.
Selfish as that may sound, for someone like me who instantly recognises those van Bergen traits, the copper concertina jewellery and pleated detailing on jackets, trousers and shirts are instant pleasers. Then there's the refreshing elements like the biro scrawlings that is particularly effective on the cream calico…a neater and more measured version of the doodles that covered the back of my notebooks…
Van Bergen has taken that familiar concertina copper jewellery and incorporated it in cat's cradle-type formations into his tops…
I’m thinking a D.I.Y is in order:

Incredible detail. I loved the top and lower pleated dress – they conjured up the word dreamy.
I fell in love with his work first time I read about him. The pleated detail and coiled bronze collars are beautiful..
xx-LJ from SOS!

The accordion pleats are so gorgeous!
The accordion pleats really do make these seem different. They also remind me of curtains, but in a pretty way. I mean it.
ok so i dont usually comment although i visit here everyday… n apparently night since this website was my first stop off after coming in slaughtered. anyways in had to comment because i loved this post… the pleats and the copper embellishments make me drool…lol dont ever stop blogging otherwise i might hav to talk 2 boring ppl on facebook instead. haaa
ahh i love how something annoying and random like a leaky biro is homed in and made into something purposeful and really quite beautiful!
wow, great textures, love it.
xx
OMGosh, the pleating/concertina on the clothes & accessories are just incredibly gorgeous! As is the ‘doodleing’ (if I could doodle like that, all my clothes would be doodled on). Love it! 🙂

Those coppery pleated bits remind me of pencil shavings–in the best possible way!
The coper concertina pencil shavings on that fabulous pleated dress with the pleating-wing-sleeves. *leSIGH*
Awesome.
I love doodling. I do it incessantly.
This collection strikes me as being really dramatic, even the blue & white. Very unusual.
the coiled broze adornments remind me so much of super long pencil shavings..
something on firsts photos remember me some gareth pugh design, his work is to similar, but REALLY not the same. I’ve been saw so many diferent fashion’s names using hearts on collections. in north and hear, in Brazil. ombrè trendy’s for me the worst to setter on any season… perfect post and sorry ’bout my bad english
marvelous!!
Some of those pieces are incredible – especially the pleated neck piece/jacket and the biro work. I would love to know how he goes about putting this into production though, or even if he intends to.
For more wonderful pleating go to http://designacademyoffashion.blogspot.com/ and check out the post called “Headspace” on the 21st Jan 2009.
Wow wow and wow once again. Susie you have the best eye I swear! Never thought I’d actually like a biro scrawling effect
i have exactly zero pounds left in my bank account, but I want! oh, so much!
beautiful stuff. makes me want to get a biro out and have a go.
Ooh, i am obsessed with pleats and had never heard of Mattijs van Bergen so thanks for the introduction. Lx.
the copper concertinas totally took me back to elementary school days of drawing in art class…such an intelligent and witty design innovation!
i love the collection but it’s crap that he has used callico, it’s cheap, it’s uncomfortable and it’s nasty. so basically he is feeling the credit crunch big time.
Wow so many different textures, some really gorgeous and different clothes.
