Liberty Trails

Who knew a brief 20 minute walk around Liberty's press day would set me off on a hour-plus internet browsing trail.  Let's start with the simple stuff… ok not simple in the basic sense but that it's a simple fact that I'm in love with the half glove shape and biker styles as proposed by Nina Peter.  I do hope that the glove bandwagon that some trend predictors have forecasted will actually come true so that I'll randomly engage in many conversations over the perfect fit in the fingers and wearing out the leather to make it soft.  Nina Peter is based in Germany and comes from a family of glovemakers with 160 yrs of history behind them.  Not that history weighs in at all into these creations which will be stocked by Liberty for next fall…

These are from her last fall collection… a series of "hautnah" or second skins that Peter has perfected whilst adding sculptural shape all made in the finest leathers…

The other brand that is new to Liberty's impressive scarf department is Trust Fun!.  The name did not twig at all until I did a bit of Googling and found out that Trust Fun is none other than the merchandise arm of fashion comic Petit Mal, a zine I wrote about way back.

The scarves are hand dyed using various techniques, each fractal print different on each scarf.  They look especially good thrown up in the light, showing off the sheer luminosity of the patterns.  It seems like Trust Fun! got merchandise happy by making t-shirts and necklaces which are all now sold out.

I dig a bit deeper to find that founders of Petit Mal and Trust Fun! seem to be multi-faceted project initiators; graphic artist Jonathan Zawada, art director Shane Sakkeus, who together have created prints for Josh Goot and Ksubi and stylist/editor Mark Vassallo who has helmed his own mag Mark.  Together they produced a second issue of Petit Mal last October which is filled with the same sort of alter-fashion universe depictions… as well as the dreaded magic eye images… I still can't see an effing thing…

I'm also intrigued by these images produced for Trust Fun!'s new exhibition Glory Holes, shot by Ben Sullivan

I'm all linked out now… seriously all of this behind a silk scarf…?!?

  1. Ooooooh, i have such a weakness for fingerless gloves (i need to be able to type 24/7, after all!). My favorite is the grey one with the silver snaps. Yum. Oh hey, what’s your opinion on clothing made from real leather?

  2. trust fun is so rad. i am one of their biggest fans i swear..i finally got my hand on their zine in the fall and it’s a constant source of inspiration for my design work. i’m stoked to see them pushing product and doing well….kind of my dream model business.

  3. Gloves have never been so exciting for me since my fruitless search for vintage ones in colbalt blue.
    These are great.

  4. What a fabulous collection of gloves!
I really love gloves & I wear them on a regular basis in all seasons.
It would be great if they did become a mainstream trend cause that would mean that I could stock up on brand new ones, currently I pretty much rely on bridal wear-or vintage/charity shops for gloves.
I think they make a lovely accessory to any outfit as well as being a barrier against a plethora of nasty germs & on a personal note, I’ve got what my husband calls “hard working hands” that are rather larger than those of the average chick & I also abhor long nails, so gloves help prettify a part of my body that definitely needs it.
Thanks for a fab post 🙂

  5. love their completely fingerless glove options. i always want to do gloves, but i find them annoying. these seem like they could be the solution.

  6. Nina Peter is awesome! I covered them last week. I love their gloves, the studs are the cherry toppers!

  7. The gloves are fantastic. However i think that the flower hat is such an inspiring piece. It is a cross between hair design and a hat (in my opinion)!

  8. I’m also curious to see if the glove trend happens. Regardless, those Nina Peter designs are mindblowing!

  9. i love petit mal and trust fun! my mom dyes things quite a bit but still can’t figure out how they do it so well.
