Brian Lichtenberg's A/W 09 collection "Human Hair As Evening Wear" (images by Ian Markell) was alarmingly uncohesive – a Rodarte-esque webby knit here, holographic panelling there, his trademark bodycon dresses and leggings scattered about, hoods, some hairy shoes for good measure – then topped off by one or two of Franc Fernandez' headpieces (Lichtenberg's collaborator for two seasons now…). Whilst confusion is still the feeling that prevails in my head, I still can't help but be enamoured with a few select items…namely the velvet panelling on the smokey grey dress, multi-layered sheer leggings, the metal construction on the giant heel. Given that Lichtenberg shows on the less-than-inspiring Mercedes Benz LA fashion week (they say it's struggling a bit… perhaps LA-ites can elaborate), I'd still say he's got the legging-encased legs to take his club kid dramatics to another city.

The hairpieces are fantastic! I love avant-garde hair and it reminds me of the Charlie Le Mindu wigs (he showed at London Fashion Week recently!) I am inspired. Check out Salon Business if you are into the ‘hairy’ world!!
I like those crazy tights that are worn ith the black shaggy capelet thingy-majiggy (God, I like to think of myself as literate and i’m writing thingy-majigy)
oh my god yeah fashion week out here is just disintegrating…
not that there was ever much of one in the first place…
are they still doing them at smashboxx?
but its exciting to see some talent coming out of here! I need those tights!!

The partnership with the venue owners of Smashbox Studios where the shows were held and IMG’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week dissolved last year. This past season was the first without Mercedes-Benz in a number of years. It was a much more independent and laid back vibe (if that’s even more possible in L.A.) but it works here. The Brian Lichtenberg show was very fun and fantastical.
LA Fashion Week feels as if it’s been in constant growing pains since the early 2000s. It was incredibly upstart and raw, and then there were highlights when labels such as Rami Kashou, Michelle Mason, Louis Verdad, Cornell Collins, etc showed independently. Then IMG came in and that format just never seemed to fit with LA’s fashion scene. Now, here we are. There’s talent, but the moment those shimmering designers whose star is rising get a chance they (understandably) show in NYC or Paris, etc.

I love those tights/pants & the hairy shoes!
I can’t help be feel a bit shocked and terrified every time I see human hair being used in fashion. :/
