Black Don’t Photograph Well

'Twas the season of presentations and all the better for it… seeing as it means I can get my grubby fingers on the clothes and touch and see things properly.  Sadly I can't bring you images that reflect that in-person experience – shitty camera is one of the reasons and in the case of Modernist's A/W 09 collection "Exotic" as it was a mostly-black collection presented in an intimate space under low lighting – that unfortunately makes for not-so-great images.

From last season's ornate cut-outs in delicate fabrics and structured dresses, Exotic is far more fluid and though all in black, still has a lot of depth, namely because of the varying textures that Abdul Koroma and Andrew Jones have used.

My favourite piece is this long sheer dress… my current fascination with all things long and sheer to faciliate layering goes on…

Yup, it's the hair… another more muted fascination that I thought was used well here as the texture of the hair is not immediately detectable and from a distance just looks like a sheeny shiny material (I was initially floored by Givenchy's use of it but now I'm not so keen…).

Waders for the arms to go with wader-type boots that Miuccia was bigging up?  These are the type of gauntlet gloves that I'm after…

…especially after seeing the way they can be scrunched up and down the arms…

  1. I actually really like the ‘hair’ dress, it’s very wearable. The gauntlets would be fun too.

  2. Love, love, love this post. Those gloves have me in a tizz (more so than all the rest of the completely covetable pretties), because I think I can DIY a pair.
    Hello! And thankyou 🙂

  3. Fact is, I was a complete ignorant about all things photography until my husband came along. And his impressive four figures camera/lenses&co. Then I learned that special lenses or filters can do wonders for your subject. Be it a person or a thing. Amazing things can happen when you play with light and cameras.

  4. susie,

was a pleasure to run into you again in ny.

  5. Hmmm…..I’m flattered. Maybe next time designers should think twice about stealing my work and passing it off as theirs. My work has been published in such publications as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Paper magazine, 2wice magazine, W magazine and many others. I have been designing and making sculptural gloves since 1983.
