Scrunchie Scrunch

In Superdrug, I found that leather scrunchies were suddenly in existence.  Memories of making my own scrunchies (I liked putting up my hair with three worn at the same time) when I was 11 with leftover scraps of pleather/vinyl type fabric came flooding back.  When I looked at Dawn McKelvie's sculpted leather jewellery, the leather scrunchie image did pop up.  Only momentarily though.  Dawn has probably never made/worn a scrunchie in her life.  She has however taken the very simple concept of ruching up some leather to make cuffs that for me begged to be worn in contrasting shades up the arm.

I'm also liking the tulle injection given to some of the necklaces prompting me to have a go at doing something useful with this difficult material again…

  1. Srunchies are directly symptomatic of children whose mothers gave birth to them in the 80s.
As a child I perpetually had my waist length hair crimped and spurting from the side of my head in a huge fluro pink srunchie. The whole thing was engineered and coiffed to perfection by my mother. I think I always prefered the topsy tail.
Good post, I like those cuffs at the top!

  2. I was totally digging them, and then I saw the last one… totally love at first sight!
I thought I saw a unicorn when I laid eyes on it.

  3. haha i suppose they do give a teeny flashback of scrunchies. I used to have colorful Barney and Disney princesses ones with lace, glittery bits and pretty much everything sticking out of them. Ah.. bless those days.
The first pieces with the leather and silver chains are very different and interesting. I like..

  4. I have a strange scrunchie lust at the moment, I’ve actually been acquiring a few lately from op-shops and stuff. Not sure what that means…

  5. Those scrunched cuffs are so much more stylish than the scrunchies of childhood. The cuffs are glamourous and rocker chic all at the same time. They kind of remind me of corsets a bit(at least the black one)

  6. My most memorable scrunchies are a red tartan one (same pattern as my winter coat) and a neon blue glitter one.
I like the orange leather bracelet here. I also like the effect of the hot pink tule with the cream leather but not too sure about the entire necklace concept.

  7. I love that slowly but surely pretty much all things 80’s are coming back (admittedly in a TOTALLY different way)…. It’s like all the designers who were born/young in the 80’s want to go back and make it 23059348769083 times better. love it though.

  8. I love that you do the scrunchie as wristband/headband as necklace thing too 🙂
Love those leather scrunchies (as bracelets though).
Also, I enjoyed your post on Sportsgirl…they do do some awesome collaborations with up-and-coming designers, but can be very run-of-the-mill with the rest of their overpriced high-street wares. Still, I keep an eye out for the fabulous collaborations 🙂
    Have a great day bella
    xx
