CNY Blues

Some of you might think that I have completely forgotten about Chinese New Year.  Truth is it's been two years in a row that I've missed CNY because of being abroad/work.  Still, it ain't over just yet as the Chinatown celebrations are rolling in this weekend in Chinatown and the strings of lantern are all up and threatening to fall on our heads (there's no need for SO many….).  We've talked about my dodgy relationship with red before on the blog.  I'm still baffled by it.  Only the Lanvin necklace has safely made it into my red wardrobe quota.  It's the usual reasons; when dressed in it, I look like Chinese festive decoration, inappropriately vampy, scary lady from Chinese Ghost Story, the list goes on…

Instead though, I'm favouring my sheer bright blues over black or grey.  I say "sheer bright blues" like I have LOTS of sheer clothes but I really have been stubbornly drawn to anything sheer of late for its ability to go over things and over each other in the same way I used to like sticking Quality Street wrappers over each other.  In the current grey state (I mean weather, not economy…I'm sick of talking about the R word…), the sheers on their own is not an option but over black/grey, I can still justify that I'm fairly wintrified.

  1. It’s ironic that at my old school, where maybe 5% of the people were Chinese and at least 90% of those 5% were adopted and raised Jewish, we had a big CNY celebration. At my current school, where about 40% of the people are Chinese, we do not have a single CNY celebration! Ah, irony. On a different note, I love your outfit. 🙂

  2. KD: That is hilarious…. gah…. foreign-born Chinese ppl deserting their roots….I’m quite enthusiastic about CNY…. not least because it FEELS like a holiday…. the other Chinese festivals just feel like random days to me…

  3. Happy New Year ! The first picture is great with all the lanterns, it’s so beautiful..This blue dress is lovely !

  4. Kong hei fat choi!!
This is the very first message I post, I read you religiously though.
Ley hay leng lui. Ngo m sik gong gong dong wa, yan wai ngo hai fat man. Meng m meng a? looool
Keep on wearing extaordinary outfits, it’s so inspiring!

  5. happy chinese new year, susie!! i actually think that wearing a color besides red, despite the fact that mother says red is lucky and any other color would be blasphemous (i exaggerate – if my mother was like this i think i’d go insane!) is a fabulous idea. after all, you’ll stand out instead of blending in with the rest of the crowd. & blue in a sea of red is gorgeous!
i love your blog & your style. though i must admit that my personal style is far more conservative & “safe”, shall i say, i adore everything in the “susie style” section. would it frighten you if i said i spent a few hours going through that entire section? (i was quite bored)
    xoxo,
    La C.

  6. You’re so good at layering, it’s not like how I see anyone else do it and it looks much more interesting.
    Happy Chinese New Year!

  7. happy belated chinese new year ms bubble! my friends here had a lovely celebration with lots of delicious food, and i hope you enjoyed your trip to chinatown too!
    xx-LJ from SOS!

  8. I love your sheer blue outfit!
I must admit as a foreign-born Chinese, I never really celebrated CNY whilst growing up in Brazil (not many Chinese there), but do so here in Oz (surrounded by aunts/uncles/grandparents and more Chinese people than in Brazil). Admittedly I ate greek on CNY this year, haha!
    Kong Hei Fat Choi!

  9. I don’t wear much red either but I am getting closer by wearing more corals. Looking forward to the CNY celebrations in Brum too this weekend. The blue is lovely.
Gung Hei fat choi to you too!

  10. wern’t your toes cold?!
i think i would be paranoid about a lantern falling on my head too, i once went under some scaffolding and a plank of wood fell down from a great height and landed just infront of me.
havn’t walked under the stuff since

  11. What did you eat? Where did you go? Looks like fun and your outfit is super cool as usual! Check out my Tokyo Harajuku H & M photos 🙂

  12. Happy CNY to you!! I can’t wait for sunday…and i agree with the whole red thing…too hard a colour to style but if it brings me luck in the year i sure hella try!!

  13. Happy New Year!
Do you still get “lucky red envelopes”?
Or does one have to be present for the celebrations in order to…
quite wary of the day my mom will say I’m too old for them.

I would appreciate it if you could take a little peek at my blog. Thanks =)

  14. HAPPY CNY to ya!
i think all the lanterns look amazing! i like it how you can see all the lanterns and then there’s the famous red phone booth on the side…
    lovely blue jacket.

  15. i was waiting for a CNY post….. wish granted ahaha, must be the severe case of CNY blues making me long for the bit of festive cheer on every single blog i stalk, have a great holiday!

  16. Agree with an above person, love your layering! I actually think you would look good in red, and you could really work the vampy look with dark red lippie as well

  17. I adore the blue getup. Only you 🙂
Happy Chinese New Year. Do you get money too? (friends of mine here in Australia do). And if the answer to that is yes, buy you a new pair of shoes 😀
    Have a good one 🙂

  18. Happy Chinese New Year – I remember all the lanterns in China Town last year when I passed through briefly on my way to the Daydream Nation show. Unfortunately I had no time to stop but wished I had.
Theoutfit looks great. You are very brave wearing peeptoe shoes at this time of year.

  19. Thanks for all the CNY well wishing ppl….
Knit Kicks: Don’t really get cold feet/legs (could even go bare legged now…)…my face/ears suffer the most…
    Nicole: Of course…
Anthea: This wasn’t taken on CNY by the by….was taken yesterday…at a crappy restaurant (we were hungry and wanted something quick though…) nothing worth noting!
Jessie: Yup I still do…the rule is until you get married you’re entitled to red envelopes….
Sarah Edwina Rose: I’m down with red lippie…just not red garments….
Raquel: To survive and not get fired?
Anika: Hehe…you saying I need MORE shoes? Nah…my money is going towards food…can barely afford to eat this month!

  20. I hope you won’t be offended if I say the bed jacket/dress combo remind me of a jelly fish.
I mean that in a good way, I like jelly fish!

  21. It was a good choice to stick to BLUES otherwise you would have ended up like the ornaments there as you were saying…
As for the R-Word: It’s not prompting me anymore to live in gray matter. I think I’ll go against it and overdress even more as much as I can. Escapism is a good way to deal with it. Let there be excess, colours, and more frills! haha

  22. I can’t pull off a bright red either, but look surprisingly good in a softer, more muted shade of red. Experiment, sheer red may be your thing after all.

  23. Gong Hey Fatt Choy!
I try to stay away from red too especially during CNY – I have a feeling I look like a lantern and I do not want to look like I’m part of the decoration!

  24. Happy Chinese New Year to you too !! I’ve been following your blog for quite sometime now, just I have not commented until today as I don’t write English as good as yours. I do care to wish you that, May you be more prettier, healthier, wealthier in the new year. 🙂 I really enjoy reading your updates and your fashion sense !!! 🙂 GAN BA DEH!!!
