Buck Up Over Some Tea

Buck
Clearly Style Salvage Steve and I have far too much on our hands as on a Sunday afternoon, inspired by David Ogilvy’s daily ritual of taking tea at 4.30pm sharp, we too decided to take afternoon tea and chat a little about our mutually favourite thing; MAGAZINES!  Even though Buck is a menswear lifestyle magazine that launched just last week, I owed it to the wonderful Elliot James Sainsbury who is the fashion editor of Buck to give it a proper review.

So cue our first attempt to discuss a magazine in a video.  Cue lots of awkward pauses, me exclaiming stupid things and my boyf’s more intelligent comments (he could discuss menswear magazines as though he was a 13th century theologian…).  Oh, and tea, biscuits and cakes of course.  I was a little inspired by the ‘presentation’ myself and Amy Prince from Surface magazine gave in San Francisco (it was a friendly face off between blogs and printed media).  I say presentation but it was more like a conversation as people commented that it felt like they were eavesdropping onto a chat.  I put it down to lack of preparation but people seemed to enjoy it ok enough.  I do realise that Steve and I myself don’t have the panache of a swooshy New York fashion editor (thanks Amy!) so if it’s a complete bore-off, apologies!

Conclusion about Buck though – more of the same please, but for women?  Cue Tuck?  Luck?  Puck?  (I’m not going to be crude and say the OBVIOUS rhyming word…)

  1. This was an adorable video!! I really liked the editorial with the black lips because they put them in such a bright and natural setting, which was a nice contrast…. now I want me some tea and biscuits and magazines!

  2. This is a nice idea, video-reviewing magazines.
Your interactions with your boyfriend were sweet too.
With regards to the magazine, when i saw the cover image in this blog post, i thought it was some new mental indie film from America or something.
I thought it was a very good magazine.
    🙂

  3. Nice video! The magazine looks like a mix between a japanese fashion magazine (the street style shots, the seven days looks,…) and a glossy european menswear magazine. Cool!

  4. the video editorial was awesomely brilliant. luv the tea, biscuits, and the accents. both of you are supremely adorable together.
    about the new man mag…
BUCK on the inside is really well done and put together; however, the cover receives a very poor rating from me. the letterhead of BUCK reminds me of some of the more typically popular font used in American college sorority/fraternity letterheads and the similar. Unless that’s what rings the ‘buy me! buy me!’ bell in guys.
I would never have thought to find such fine information/snaps/details inside by looking at that particular cover.

  5. You guys have the best accents ever! And that magazine looks great, now I have to find one… Thank you for the review. 🙂

  6. it’s all about the video blogs these days!
i think my favourite thing is the wearing gloves while magazine reading. the ultimate in style over practicality.
oh and the mention of carbooty, the show.

  7. i had such a fun time watching that! great idea. i wish i had buddies to review mags with over tea..what a pleasant way to spend an afternoon:)

  8. P.S. I love both of your voices – Susie, your voice reminds me of my cousin’s! 🙂

  9. Love the video blog! And the gloves!!
I think you can get the magazine in Borders, Asda, Tesco, WhSmiths and M&S. Ive read the mag and i love it! Brilliant street style pics!!The website is great too (www.buckstyle.com)

  10. HAHA, Movember! Why nobody thought of growing “something” for women’s cancer? Are we only into IPLs and all?
    Love the video!

  11. any chance you and steve want a roomie any time soon? haha i could sit and listen to your discussions at hours on end 🙂
i liked that there was joint insight on the mag and both of your observations were delightfully entertaining. im hoping for some more vlogs from you and steve in the not too distant future!
i think Buck is conceptually interesting with the odd mix of street style/food/fashion/beauty and im excited to see where it goes in the future. i guess you cant judge a mag by its cover.

  12. hehe nice videos! i actually like the cover! it looks a bit like a book…it’d be even better if it looked like a cook book or something.. haha

  13. You two are ADORABLE! And, I want to steal your accent…don’t think I’m too weird now! Ace mag too.

  14. i have loved your blog for a while now & it was so lovely to see & hear both of you. more of these please, i thought the interaction, content & design were great!

  15. Love the video – would love to come over to your house for afternoon tea and biscuits and chats about magazines! As for Buck – looks like a great magazine, I’d read it…if I had a man to buy it and leave it lying around. Would definitely agree with the cover being weak compared to what’s inside though.

  16. After watching the video if that mag was available here in Perth I’d have bought a copy really. 🙂
Love your gloves and great to hear your voice. I figured you’d have fab British accent but it was better than I expected. LOL I wonder if that’s what people would say listening to my half broken Australian accent. Tragically I didn’t grow up speaking English.. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Well done.

  17. love the review…. still the main question is…. where did the bf bought the bow tie?
    cheers
    fran

  18. This is such a darling of a video! Love the beginning where it was black&white, the conversation between you and Steve, and lastly I love your teacups.
Then the love I have for your accent belongs in an entirely different Venn diagram, because it’s amazing!

  19. I think the video demonstrates the extent to which I am Susie’s little bit of rough!
Also, I have to add that we bought the tea cups especially for the occasion. These are the best props ever though and I would like a cup of tea and a cake every day day at 4:30.

  20. ah that was the sweetest thing ever! What a lovely start to my Monday! And while I’m sure you aren’t susie’s bit of rough Steve (ah I love that saying), I was surprised how posh you sounded Susie!
Regardless of all my ever so important observations, I really agree with Daisy re: American collegiate style font. For me, it’s quite offputting. Before I even read the blog post, I thought it was some offering from A&F or something.

  21. i was thinking the cover appeared kinda odd – college font, articles in really small font with lots of space as opposed to the usual LARGECAPITALIZED, SUPER SUFFOCATING titles, and the lone medium shot figure with fish and chips (?!) looked more apt for like.. readers digest or time magazine haha. but i really like the content. esp the step-by-step instructions! you and your bf are so cute together too (:

  22. Oh Susie, how I love your accent and the gloves with tea set and magazines!!

  23. that was really good! i enjoyed that immensely and it was great to hear your voice (susie) and now i have it to help narrate your blog because i thought you would’ve sounded more high pitched and naive. i thought steves’ voice would sound like that 🙂
please do more of these more often (the intro and music was awesome)

  24. I am so relieved to hear that your voice is lovely! I was getting all nervous that it’d be annoying and thus taint my reading experience forever. PHEW.

  25. hey check me out!!!!
TEXTSTYLES is up in that joint!
in the print copy and online!
and keep an eye out for more to come.
    kisses
