Chalk and Felt-Tips

When I was doing art A-level, I had a thing about mixing chalk pastels, felt-tips and colouring pencils into sketches…. all three having really different saturations of colour even if you got the same shade of blue across all three media.  It seems designers have been getting into different brightness/saturation levels, randomly and blindly picking out colours and jsut bunging them together.  Not exclusively jewel.  Not stricly pastel.  Not exactly glaring and bright.  Jonathan Saunders bought all of that together in satin explosions so as to give an overall shiny sheen…

However, the designer that did the saturation/brightness/palette mix the best is…noneother than THE NEXT…(???)… Julian Louie!  I’m so chuffed I decided to a photographer and writer to cover the S/S 09 presentation otherwise I might never have seen these colour mixes which although it’s early days yet I’m carrying with me all the way to spring and possibly earlier than that especially if I suddenly feel like throwing my navy coat over my Tao peach knitted shorts over some lilac opaque tights and my vintage emerald green silk top… the thought may never enter the head if I hadn’t seen these pics. The tightly tuned shapes and apt judgement of ruffles/embellishments of course seal the deal but it’s the colours that are truly converting to chalk and felt-tips…

  1. it’s all the volume play that really catches my eye with Jilian Louie, though i think the colors/textures really bring everything together! – oh and as per your previous post, you don’t look half bad lady, i wouldn’t worry too much 🙂

  2. Wow, absolutely stunning collection! The colour combos mixed with the excellent patternmaking are amazing! I would wear ANY and ALL of those dresses…

  3. love the amazing construction details, the colours and obviously the mix of textures

  4. Swoon (my new over-used word, but very appropriate to how I feel about these)! I did an art portfolio on color and vibrations of light; these collections make me so happy.

  5. i love the use of frills in this it kind of reminds me of the christopher kane collection a few seasons ago

  6. all my favorite things in one..thanks for sharing. it’s gorgeous + eclectic. i love the inclusion of jewels, like a sweet surprise!

  8. wow, what a great collection, i just love all the details, and mixes.
and the blue lippy… i don’t know why but i kind of like it here.

  9. Whilst I like the Julian Louie collection I LOVE Jonathan Saunders’ new stuff. It’s so vibrant and optimistic. He’s such an intelligent designer, I can’t wait to see what he does for Pollini.

  10. his collection is looking a lot like christopher kane – only pastels 🙁

  11. This plus the ruffled metallics post… Where else does one read such stuff?? Am so glad I popped in though over-busy, coz in the process of launching a quality quarterly dubbed The New Waver, France’s cutting edge… Bravo Susie! You’re Da Best !

  12. Also…I don’t really see the Chris Kane comparison…only that they’re both short and tight (I’m assumingg ppl are thinking of the SS07 collection…)…the use of colours are so vastly different with Julian I think creating a more unique palette not to knock Kane of course…. just that I don’t really see the resemblance…

  13. I LOVE those clothes and Jonathan Saunders, as stupid as this sounds, was THE BOMB. But what’s up with the lipstick?

  14. im not really a pastel or too colorful person but this is quite lovely and cute. i especially like the pleat back dress
