The grass is always greener on the other side… or in this case… the clothes are always cooler in the Southern Hemisphere. Ok, no that’s not a given rule but I seem to have stumbled on so many Aussie fashion designers, that are far more impressive and rich in variety than what Vogue.co.uk throws up in terms of their Aussie Fashion Week coverage. The thing is though, with seasons operating in a complete flip reverse down under, it does make my coveting process a little bit jumbled. This is Gail Sorronda‘s SS08-9 collection, as in the season they are anticipating come Sept-Oct time similar to Europe, US and Asia gearing up for all the AW08-9 stuff we’re going to be buying. Whilst I love the sexy black, the tight bodies and sheer panels, I can’t help but go back…
…and look at Gail’s AW08 collection, as in their autumn/winter that Aussies are in the middle of. All lovely pieces of black done in an interesting way. Not to take away anything from the collection above but there’s a bit of richness and ooomph to the stuff below that is just ripe for wearing as our summer comes to a chilly close (was it me or was anyone physically shivering last night in London???).

I definitely agree about the grass is greener! i live in Australia and although we have some great designers and plenty of emerging designers i just cant help but wish Australian people were a little more conscious of there clothing. we are known for hanging about in beachy clothes and thongs (flip-flops) and i must say that this is not completely un-true! london style looks so much more sleek!
yay!! Ausiie designers!!!!! it’s great to see some more talent out there
Oooo – big sleeves….textures….all the things I love! There are some serious Aussies out there. The more I look, the more I like.
check out this girl i found, you might like her.

ps. love your blog.
ouah..love these pic..really nice!!thanks for sharing
wow….
this stuff is incredible
i lvoe that dress with the tiered skirt.
Funny that you should think the grass is greener, because when I look at your blog I often wish I lived in England instead of a small rural town in the US!
one of the best parts about the internet is finding out what the heck is going on down there! i am so loving australian fashion… it’s so great.
i just looked at this and have no idea what the clothes are like because i was so distracted by how skinny the models were. i really wish more designers would use healthy-looking girls.
Oh my the A/W collection is divine – that first dress is unwearable for me but I love it! The Aus stuff isn’t covered or stocked enough and no I was shivering too – so autumnal the last two days, henc blackberry picking!

Very visually interesting collections. I like the contrast of opaque and sheer, the kind of draping and tying of fabrics.
I love it all, no matter what the season.
wow i’m really impressed, while looking at the pictures the basic ideas and deets like the fringing and sheer parts seem like your eyes would be used to it but the designs are very fresh, i love the shapes and especially low neckline but high waist with adorned long halter straps that hang down, it seems there are thoughts and considerations rather than accidents.
I adore the different textures in the outfits, particularly loving the use of sheer fabric. Very classy! See, there’s no reason why entirely black ensembles have to be boring. These are far from it!

It is soooooo cool when you see a UK girl acknowledge aussie fashion – Im an aussie and always feel like we are percieved as totally bogan and nowhere as fashionable as uk and u.s fashion chicks. Good work Susie!
I love the sheer details going on, and theres lots of beautiful shapes. And yes, its been freezing here, is it really august?!
Oh I love that model! She’s australian and aboriginal. Isn’t she gorgeous?
For once i’m reading a stylebubble post and i’m not jealous wishing i lived in england, I love so many young desigeners from london!
I’m lucky enough to live in Gail’s hometown and have (currently the only) gail sorronda concept store in my suburb! My favourite collection by far would have to be birds of prey ss07/08. I ended up with so many pieces that have lots of different ways of styling them
although I live in Australia. I don’t get to see much of her designs. Again.. it’s not all the same in a country.. if I were in the East would have been much better.. maybe i should hit some dpt store.. they would have her designs ??? mmm need to check that.
you can take my sydney home susie! i’d swap with you any day!!!
new zealand fashion is amazing too.
i sometimes forget how good aussie fashion can be (thanks to cheap chain stores like supre and jay jays ughhh), but there are a lot of amazing aussie designers out there. gail sorronda is amazing! i wish i could afford her stuff.
The reversed notion of the seasons does get me mixed up as well.
So, I guess it would be safe to say hoard the stuff now and wear them next season. I have to say, there are a considerable number of Aussie labels getting my attention. More Aussie fashion for the world! haha
Gail Sorronda is amazing! I love her website. She did a range for Designers For Target but I don’t think the general public ‘got’ her stuff.
You’d be lucky to get her clothes at prices like that ever again. Great post Susie!
