Fashion Hangover

preenawpink.jpg

‘m experiencing the biggest fashion ‘hangover’ ever.  If there are two kinds of fashion hangover; one being that you regret something you bought with every look at the offending item incurring a wince and a shudder from you, then the other would be moaning and groaning about passing up on something and NOT buying something despite having the means to.    It’s a feeling that you feel in your gut whenever your mind wanders and ‘D’oh’, you slap your forehead and scrunch up your eyes and think ‘Why did I do that?’.  Well it happened with the Preen sample sale over the weekend (has finished now).  Apologies for not putting up a notice as i didn’t know about it until the 11th hour.  I was expecting it to be a quite normal Preen sample sale selling ‘vintage’ Preen, very old pieces.  There was that but then also a sale selling the recent, more recognisable seasons with showpieces with hefty 80% discounts.  The pieces that immediately caught my eye for obvious reasons were the hot pink pieces from the AW07-8 collection, the last that they showed in London before defecting to New York (it makes me sounds like an embittered LFW fanatic but I do think the designs have been a little watered down since the move…… *she says in wee voice*).  In particular, these dresses were knocked down from around ¬£500-600 to ¬£240 and ¬£195 respectively  I um-ed and ah-ed in the tiny shop, spending about an hour in there (and trust me, it’s a tiny space to spend an hour in…) going in and out of the changing room, picking those pieces up and putting them down again and generally making the shop assistants think that I was a bit of a twat.  The fit was perfect, the zips were very zippy and the pink….it is that perfect shade of hot pink which I’m quite obsessed with because it has some real depth to it (unlike the ¬£7 cheapie I bought which I love still but the pink doesn’t quite hit the right note for me…).  Yes, the obsession got to the point where I was chairing a mini-debate in my head about whether a shade of pink had depth.  Physically, after wiping the perspiration of my sweat drenched head (like I said…small space), I put all the pink down and opted for some black leather panelled trews (see my Betty Catroux look…) but I can’t quite get the pink out of my head.  When I was soul wardrobe searching yesterday, a flash of pink would bring up that bottom of the stomach feeling.  Why oh why did I put the bloody hangers down?

I have realised I’ve just spent a lo-ong paragraph babbling about some fluffy pink bit of Preen…. but these are really at the top of the pink hierarchy…the heavy fabric, the subtle stretch, the slanted pleats…oh the stomach groans again… I doubt that other type of pink; Pepto Bismol will cure this hangover….

  1. Oh Susie, I know how you feel. Don’t fret my pet, I’m sure a bit of hot pink sunshine will come back into your life! Those dresses are stellar, however 🙁

  2. Oh, I know that feeling all too well. But the good thing is that sometimes I can recognize when an item will become an “OMG WHY DIDNT I GET THAT WHYYY WHYYYY” so I can make a better decision. That hasn’t saved me entirely, but you know, I appreciate my brain trying to help you out.
That dress on the right with the swirly zippers is AMAZING.

  3. Was at Harvey Nicks this weekend and hidden in all the seasonal colours was beautiful patent black Marc Jacobs hobo handbag…..and I put it back on the shelf. Hangover, mourning period, commiseration, I sympathise! p.s. That pink looks hot!

  4. Oh no! The trousers were nice and all, but those dresses are so much more you. That zippy one is just amazing.
What I wouldn’t give to go to a Preen sample sale, especially for the older stuff – new stuff’s a bit too blah mostly.

  5. I ADORE that pink, and that dress on the right is AMAZING!
I’m sorry to hear you didn’t get it.. Lesson learned is always spend your money, I suppose? Until you’re broke, at least, heh.

  6. I so know the feeling. Especially when you don’t buy the item of desire BUT then you then see someone walking down the street (a few weeks later) wearing the exact same item you decided not to buy… and that person looks totally amazing. HATE HATE HATE

  7. I feel your pain… I know it’s not exactly the same and I’m not sure about the size but I came accross a pink Preen A/W 07 dress on ebay today [item 330249940449]- might be worth a look, if you haven’t seen it already!

  8. omg, the amount of times ive done that. or even worse when you go away to think about it over a coffee then you decide to go for it and low and behold its gone. the lesson is always buy. then if you get it home an change your mind you can always return it.

  9. Oh I really hate that feeling! Love the term “fashion hangover” tho’.

  10. aw, my love, i’m sure there are plenty of pinks in the sea…. you’ll find the one, someday
    😉
i know… getting the right shade, once you’ve seen what you want… i’m still cursing myself for not getting the balenciaga gladiators for 60%off… and that was over a year ago.

  11. gaah, i love those dresses! i just want to hang them up on a white wall and admire them for hours.. 🙂

  12. I’ve been there before (several times!) having the regret of buying something that I’ll never wear and the regret of letting something fabulous pass me by. Although, with maturity, you can avoid buying things that you regret. But for the other type of fashion hangover… the only cure is to buy it when it comes your way again (hopefully), or save up and wait for something better. And usually something better always comes along!

  13. Oh Susie…next time you’ll make up for it, I’m sure. Though you’ll probably end up making quite a large dent in your bank account after this ‘fashion hangover’.

  14. if you think about it, if you reeeally wanted it and it was fate, you would have snapped it up, if there was that doubt then maybe it’s just hindsight because in the shop it obviously didn’t wow as much as in your mind or the picture? but you know how to cure these hangovers- next time you’re not sure about something pricey, you will use this as an excuse to just going for it!

  15. Awww… Susie… don’t hang yourself over this. We ALL do it. There are so many missed opportunities in my life, they could make a wardrobe all their own! The lesson, dear sister is, BUY. NEVR PUT IT DOWN! JUST BUY!

  16. ohh im suffering a fashion hangover too, i went into allsaints last week to find the most beautiful black dress with studs and beadwork on it reduced to £42 from £190 and it would have looked great with gladiator sandles very rock chic! but no for some reason i couldnt bring myself to buy it and now its gone and i really want it! nooooooo

  17. I know exactly what you mean!!! I have never heard anyone term the feeling so well though!!! I too passed up something that I can’t find anymore!!! it was online and it was a beautiful necklace from premium pearl with rhinestones- absolutely GORGEOUS!!! i wish I had just bought it!!!

  18. reminds of me of my favourite shade of pink felt tip pen when I was in primary school. I loved that gorgeous shade so much, but one day the ONLY pen in that exact shade rolled under a big set of drawers, never to be seen again…
colours can have such amazing effects on you!

  19. My fashion hangovers occur half way through London Fashion Week when my brain is numb and I simply can no longer comprehend clothing.
