Outsapop is Out

More DIY ideas a-flowing.  How did I manage to miss the DIY shenanigans of Finnish blogger Outi Pyy on her blog Outsapop?  Look on the right and see all her DIY credentials; work on Flickr, contributions to various crafty sites and tutorials on how to create what she calls ‘Trashion’.  By mixing trash and fashion, she means she’s using unwanted goods to make something good… really good… so good that the word ‘Trashion’ almost doesn’t apply as her creations are not shoddy DIY affairs.  Being the admin of Flickr group Trashionista, she also amazes me with her encouragement of ‘re-fashionining’ aka clothes customisation.  I don’t like being preached to (vegetarians could never let me eat my chicken drummers in peace…) but quite frankly, I’m happy to succumb to her not-smug-at-all ‘I made this myself’ way of life.

For now though whilst I sit in the corner of my room holding my head in my hands and sobbing ‘Why am I not as nimble fingered in the DIY department???’, I’ve asked her to make me one of her signature zipper collars because they’re amazing…lots of zippers I tells ya.  Oh and they seem easy to hook onto a simple dress to make a halterneck type thing.  Yes, I’ve become one of those time-poor twats… I like my fast-route DIY and I’m not afraid to say it out loud goddamnit!

  1. the deal looks very interesting…i’m going to check out both her blog and her flickr group soon…very soon. does she have an etsy shop as well? she should!
this is going to be a DIY summer

  2. i am SO tempted to get one of these! what am amazing idea, and i’ll bet people spend a while figuring out exactly what it’s made of from afar

  3. oh god junya watanabe and rei kawakubo are geniuses and my fashion gods.
susie have you ever heard of the ykk design awards held in japan? my ex-school, bunka fashion college, usually sends some students to take part and it is always super amazing. you can see some ex-winners here:
    YKK Award Design Contest http://www.ykk.co.jp/fa/past_award/7th_award.html
also, just in case you’re interested, you can see some amazing clothes in the soen contest, whose judges include yohji yamamoto, tsumori chisato etc, all acclaimed alumni of the school. http://www.bunka.ac.jp/soen/index.htm
oh, and better yet, check out “bunka tv” where we have our yearly fashion show, attended by the who’s who in japan fashion. my favorites are from 2005 and 2006. at least watch the ends cos they’re amazing! 🙂
i hope you like it. some of it’s very costumey but definitely inspiring.

  4. You always make me want to add one really bulky piece to my outfits, I feel so sleek and boring…
these are beautiful, over the top and so beautiful.

  5. These really are amazing. They also make me think of the zipper flowers that seemed to be everywhere…a year or so ago, maybe?

  6. People who can make their own stylish wearables reserve the right to a smug attitude, if they want one. I do say this partly because such deft skills are truly impressive, and partly so that if I ever develop any particularly impressive skills of my own, I can walk around with the self-satisfied attitude I certainly hope I’d end up having.

  7. this is brilliant. it reminds me of the early martin margiela number 0 pieces. i put up a couple as an entry if you wanted to check it out.
    love,
    danny

  8. My graduate collection @ uni was sorta along similar lines ………..

  9. wow those zippers are friggin amazing.
I go through the same thing when i try to make something. I’m just so goddam impatient. That’s why my DIY projects fail.
I seriously have got to remind myself to go ‘slow and steady’.

  10. I say ‘sing out louise’, I happy for someone else to finger work. But riddle me this Madame Bubble where does a time poor despot turn for such sartorial relief?

  11. I had no idea the neckpiece was made from zips until I finished reading your entry, it doesn’t look like it’s been ‘recycled’ .. because sometimes utilising typical household materials can have that ‘recycled’ look.. y’know? I thought it was a vintage beaded necklace. It is such a good idea.. I mean, you see zips being used quite a lot, but I haven’t seen anything like this before.
Don’t forget to show us.. I’d like to see how you’d style it all.

  12. these are beautiful… so sculptural. it’s so strange because i saw a box of zippers at the flea market, i wanted to take them all home… but then what?

  13. These are simply stunning. I have a massive obsession with collars/neck detailing/sculpture, and these zip pieces are pressing all my buttons at once…I’m going into overload! Cx

  14. That’s one of the nicest DIY creations I’ve seen. It actually looks like a real thing, if that makes sense?

  15. Sometimes the things we may render as useless or outmoded could evoke something great if utilized in a different way like customization and sorts.
DIY is just so much fun. You just can’t help but keep on discovering! haha

  16. What a great idea, they look incredible! They look so delicate from a distance, I didn’t realise they were all zips!
Another great find S, good work!

  17. Thank you so much for your comments :))) And Thank you Susie! This has truly made my day!
Helen-LG, you´re right. That collar on her is made by CommeDesGargons (SS05 collection). This is where I originally got the idea. They just look so unreal. It took me over two years to figure out how they had been done, but I cracked it eventually.
I decided to photograph all the making-steps for you guys, so check my Flickr site or blog. I should have this done in a week or so.

  18. Did you see the Junya Watanabe capes with the zipper collars at the Dover Street Market sale? Very Naiiize.

  19. outsapop is really great. she is definitely devoted to the cause and doing it with style. she sent me a superkind & encouraging note once, it was much appreciated. and her work is really really good lookin’.

  20. Wow. I love those pieces from Kate Cusack. Thanks Clover for the link!!
Susie´s zipper necklace is now pinned on the dummy. Go to my Flickr stream if you want to see all the making of pictures.

  21. I’ve been checking out her blog for a year or so now, and if I ever have the time, I’d like to try making one of these collars.
