BYT’s ideas, not mine…

If there was a daily blog dedicated to Brightest Young Things’ DIY posts, I’m sure a lot of you would get clickety click happy.  Actually, just any fashion DIY specific blog would be mucho appreciated.  Alas, time is of the essence and there just isn’t enough of the precious elixir that is time.  Hence, why my stack of projects are building up into a tidy physical pile and moleskin list.  Brightest Young Things may be a DC-specific lifestyle site but its style section packs quite a punch with the $40 outfit challenge and DIY posts being my personal faves.  The attractive thing about their DIY posts is that you don’t need to spend a great deal to yield great results.  In fact, there’s tongue in cheek element that sends up the absurdity of the original items in question.

For instance, the Chanel Cabas bag that has been likened to the binliners and yes, using some bin liners can get you your very own DIY Chanel Cabas

Teen Vogue featuring a pricy Moschino Cheap is Chic trench also riled them up to knock up this DIY version….

Some are practical and easy like these saddle shoes

The one that really makes you go ‘Doh!’ is this Marc by Marc Jacobs lego accessory one.  Really why buy the real thing or even the Dee and Ricky versions when you can go as exaggerated or as subtle as you want with a bargain bucket of Lego…

  1. wow, what they did was just amazing! I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for more of these DIY posts on the site.

  2. I’m sorry but I think all these DIY projects are really ticky tacky looking. I’ve never even attempted them because the end result generally looks pretty naff.

  3. hi, this is totally irrelevant btw. but did u ever get those miu miu teacups? i was moseying around Poste Mistress in convent garden and they them in either white or a magenta-pink, in sizes 4 and 6. As of this afternoon, anyway!

  4. I’ve been meaning to make a lego headband for forever… thanks for reminding me!
(And speaking of the teacup shoes, they are on sale at Barneys now)

  5. kinda hilarious, but hard to pull off, me thinks, esp. if the bag was really made out of thin plastic, or legos that aren’t glued together properly…the shoes and trench are more realistic and won’t look so diy, though…

  6. Thanks for pointing out something so cool. It looks inspiring/useful — and it’s always a plus to see humor and irreverence in fashion.

  7. My boyfriend just leaned over and anounced he’s making himself a lego belt! I’ll keep you posted on the results.

  8. i love byt!!!!! i know people get pretty discouraged when they do a project and it doesn’t look perfect. for me, the imperfection is what makes my project a personable creation. if you wanted something perfect, you can always buy it in a boutique 🙂
sometimes, the problem is tat you must embrace the imperfection. i’m working on making a hoodie modeled on an old cdg jacket and it’s taking forever. i know it won’t look perfect but i am gonna be super proud when it is done.
    love,

  9. I think the lego idea is absolutely brilliant.
On another note, some family are visiting me from HK this summer and was wondering any magazines you suggest? I’m going to ask them to bring some over but not sure where to start!

  10. Those Lego accessories are a cool idea but even easier to DIY. You’d literally be throwing away your money by buying the MJ ones, or even the $65(!) knock offs.

  11. I stopped looking at that website once I realized it’s always the same group of self promoting hipsters in every single darn photo. Those kids are total Misshapes wanna bes. . . except it’s DC (yawn). And if you carry a bag made of black trash bags. . .you’re gonna look like you’re carrying a bag made out of black trash bags! I mean really people. . .

  12. oh dear, another website for me to spend hours of my life on. i love the shoes. so ridiculously simple.
by the way, are you going to the EETS free booze shopping extravaganza (as i’m calling it)? if so, i may see you there.

  13. Those lego accessories can be seen adorned on many an Emo round by me. One of the other comments were right about being a little bit foolish to buy the marc jacobs ones…though if you had the cash to throw about then I guess it’s anyones game!

  14. that ‘saddle shoe’ photo featuring turlington and the other girl is actually from some vogue italia 1994.prada brogues i guess, not sure.

  15. It sucks that Dee and Ricky didn’t get the credit for the Lego accessories they made for MJ–i’ve seen it msicredited everywhere–including Teen Vogue. It should read Dee and Ricky for Marc by Marc Jacobs. They are actually making really rad heart-shaped lego pins/barooches now too.

  16. I’m really quite confused about the Dee and Ricky thing… I DID think they were the ones that made the belts etc for Marc Jacobs but then when I looked in Teen Vogue editorials, the prices quoted were FAR higher than what they are on the Dee and Ricky site which made me think they do their own cheaper accessories and then sold their wares to MJ and let MJ sell them under the MJ name…? Hmmm…. sorry about my misinformation…Dee and Ricky’s and Marc for Marc Jacobs lego accessories are one and the same but I’m still confused as to how the selling process is being done…

  17. Hi Susie, The Dee and Ricky lego accessories are not knock offs. Dee and Ricky are 21 yr old twins based in NYC who designed ALL the lego belts, pins and headbands shown on the Marc By Marc Jacobs runway last Sept. Marc Jacobs’ boyfriend saw their designs and thought they were cool. He introduced the twins to Marc Jacobs who then decided to include their pieces in his show. It’s too bad that they do not get the credit for their work and designs.
