Unsexifying…

I‚Äôve never dug the sexy secretary/librarian thing. The seductive looks over the glasses, the pencil skirts that are a little on the tight side, the unbuttoned cardigans, the hair that falls out of its chignons, – all of it plays all too easily into clich√©d sexual fantasies of guys that I‚Äôd rather not give the satisfaction of portraying. Instead I‚Äôd rather go the opposite direction and be an undecidedly unsexy secretary/librarian with some sheer pop socks and these deceptively simple clothes from the Sarah Locke SS08 collection. From her Miro-inspired last collection, she now gives us separates that are just that little bit loose and long for most people‚Äôs tastes but when executed with pleats, interesting fabrics and when I have a full belief that seemingly ‚Äògeeky‚Äô looking clothes have their own special charm…. it all makes this collection an enticing prospect for covering up for summer.

  1. Clothes that make you look shorter??? Or is the model short….. I do like the idea of some of the pieces…….but in my personal opinion these are not nice photos……

  2. Ah but the question is…DOES everyone have an aim of appearing taller? I certainly don‚Äôt mind shortening myself…. height has never been something I wanted to gain really and it‚Äôs not because I‚Äôm tall… I‚Äôm not…

  3. I’m with you on rejecting the librarian (as well as other “sexy”) stereotype. How many times have I heard a man rave about red-headed nurses or Catholic schoolgirls?
Like that black shirt quite well, although perhaps not with that particular skirt. Would rather see it with trousers, black. It has an interesting assertive edge to it, and I am somewhat afraid that a man might be excited into thinking it was fetish wear.

  4. the too-long-ness makes it weird and distracting – it looks like a mistake. I don’t like it, though. I have just bought a pencil skirt which is too long for my taste and this reminds me just of it and it annoys me. The last pic looks like a Picasso though, disassembled and reassembled – two parts of the body from two different angles in one picture. Weird.

  5. My favorite look is the second one — the white sleeveless blouse and the black skirt (with the little tie!n and are those buttons?) are so classic and interesting.
…The boutique is in Meguro? What an interesting part of Tokyo to pick for a boutique location.

  6. I like the unusual proportion of the clothes, though I see them more as clothes suitable for winter (i.e) now than summer..

  7. Susie- i totally agree about the sexy librarian stereotype which is just….played out and obnoxious! These unflattering, fabric heavy looks for are totally a new sexy. It’s sort the sort of cloaking of the body and even de-gendering that makes it….smart and androgynous.
    thanks for the post!

  8. yeah, i’ve never been one for the traditional means of sexy…. it just alway seemed rather cheap and expected…
this collection is rather interesting, it would be interesting to see how someone pulls this off and look beautiful.

  9. I don’t really care what people think is sexy, but I’ve always liked the sexy librarian thing. Of course, being a bespectacled book nerd with a love of 40s clothes makes the look come naturally. In this, you and I are thinking the same thing: wear what you love, men be damned.

  10. it could be the models pose, with the hunched back and awkward angles, that make these clothes ‘unsexified’… like if they were worn by a gucci-esque model with fishnets, smokey eyes and leather gloves it would totally sex it up. i think sexiness is to do with the wearer, and being sexy definitely starts with being comfortable and confident!

  11. Ive been thinking about these photos all day…..
the clothes if hanging on the rail may look appealing….but the styling or the model in the photo is just not working for me…..
maybe id show this to the fellow fashion students in my class for their opinions…
    who is the target market??
    AAaargh my head….

  12. There hasn’t been a documented case of an actual “sexy secretary/librarian” since the 80’s.
    I’m sure of it!

  13. I agree with Sophie is not the clothes that are not sexy, but the awful styling and the model’s poses. It’s just not working at all.

  14. I LOVE this!!!! It’s so hard to find structured clothes that are all about clean lines and interesting shapes. The best is the first shot, the ballerina length and the pockets. Beautiful, almost futuristic.
