Two Different Kinds of Invites…

I get unreasonably excited whenever I see an air mail sticker because it reminds of those snail mail years of receiving letters on Sanrio stationary adorned with gummy stickers and written with smelly pens from people in Hong Kong.  Sadly, all I get these days are virtual drinks and kisses via Facebook.  Ok, enough of the old woman in me lamenting away.  I got especially excited when I saw that this piece of post was from Daydream Nation, one of the very few Hong Kong labels that shows in London and whose shows (SS08, AW07) I look forward to very much indeed.  Their illustrated fabric invite for their AW08-8 show ‘Good Night Deer’ has me intrigued in every way possible because going from past experiences, I haven’t a clue what to expect.

From a personal and intimate invite to something on a grander scale which I’m not sure is a good thing or not.  The Gucci bash invite arrived and if you didn’t know the scale of the party, the weight of the invite is there to thump it into you.  It came in its own marbled box and is a black perspex block which opens up to flash that predictable bit of gold.  I kid you not, the invite weighed as much as all three of my Forsyte Saga volumes.  So…um… I’m actually going then?  It isn’t a predictably tragic teen-movie scenario where the nerd’s hopes are raised and then crushed?  I am sounding rather deranged with the anticipation/fear for this thing even though I was shrugging it all off until about two days ago.

  1. how do you get invited to shows?!? I really want to goooo! even just to sit at the back and be snarled at by the uber fashion types….
    more info susie pleaseeee!
    X

  2. I never would have thought that invites to such things could be so elaborate, though I probably should have.

  3. Well, only the best for Gucci huh? The Daydream nation invites are so pretty!

  4. Hi! I’ve been reading for awhile, actually a very very long while, but I just had to post. There are THREE forsyte sagas? I thought there were only 2, I must find me some more damian lewis.
And, I am incredibly jealous of the Gucci invite. I’m sure you’ll find an appropriately English look.

  5. Gah, is that a scarf/invite Daydream Nation sent? That would be cool sewn onto a canvas bag or t-shirt.
LOLOL about the Forsyte Saga Susie, I can spend all day watching period miniseries. One of these days I’ll have to tell you about my run in with Ioan Gruffudd, le sigh.

  6. oh my goodness… you live the most glamourous life… wow… i’m sure you will have tons of fun, although admittedly i’d be a nervous marble encrusted blogger if i went to the gucci party.

  7. Susie, as we say in the states, you are PSYCHED. I have no doubt you will BLOW MINDS with your charming style at all glamorous events.
I discovered your blog about three months ago and am completely inspired by you. Don’t be alarmed if you start seeing girls in the lower east side dressed in fabulous unexpected layers.
Great writing! See you in the Big Apple
    xoxo from NYC

  8. Ah.. not a marble box but a marbled carboard box…. I wouldn’t be arsed to carry it home if it was indeed marble!
anon: It really depends on what you do…. for London Fashion Week, I’m going on behalf of both the blog and also as a freelance journalist…. same with PFW….the Gucci invite however is Gucci outreaching to certain bloggers… I’m afraid I don’t really have any substantial advice…
loopylulu: I was actually referring to the actual books of which there are three volumes. The ITV series only covered the first volume. The second and third volumes goes into life after Fleur and Michael Mont get married… the origianl BBC 60’s series delves into that bit….
Moodboard: I have to say… I really hated Ioan Grufford in Forsyte Saga…. can’t really get him and Gina McKee around in my head….
I will sew the invite onto a tote me thinks…
DCB: Yeah… ever so stellar…. got to scrub the bathroom in a bit… : )
jc: I have high expectations for NYC style…!

  9. my you get so many invites!!! i get over-excited when i see an air mail sticker too, because i have some pen friends from other continents…

  10. haha can you say BUDGET! That is such a deluxe invite.. You can only imgaine how over powering the canapés will be!
Both invites are lovely though. I’d be more intrigued by the hong kong one too, it’s sort of hansel and gretal ^____^

  11. well, Gucci is a luxury label so the invitation looks so predictable….
i like the Daydream Nation fabric invite better, it’s far more creative.

  12. I think Typepad ate my last comment…I’m thrilled for you, Susie! the Daydream Nation invite is prettier, but the Gucci thing really does hit one like a brick- hope you have a fantastic time!

  13. susie do you feel at all used when you recieve these invitations or no its just exciting for you?

  14. Anon: Ah… the inevitable question… am I selling out by accepting these invitations and am I getting manipulated by the big bad designers…
Well with regards to the Daydream Nation invite, I’m going on behalf of both the blog and for Fashion156 (and other titles that I write for as I do freelance work…) and I choose to post about them without any obligations because I genuinely love their work…
As for Gucci, I have been completely transparent as to their intentions. Yes, I will be posting about the event but I’m not selling readers anything and I think I can give readers here credit enough to think for themselves and take what they like from what I write. I’m under no pressure to give Gucci free publicity and I choose to do it on my own terms….. I don’t think anyone is going to suddenly think ‘Ah… Gucci… wonderful…’ after reading any of my Gucci-related musings…..
So in short, am I being used? Perhaps. But within it is all within my realm of control….

  15. I don’t think most wedding invitations have their own marble box — ah well, makes it harder to say no, right?

  16. susie.. i can see how smaller shows like daydream’s nations could be much more exciting and unpredictable than the glitz and glamour excpected of gucci. i cant wait to some day go to fashion week! some day i hope..

  17. I love the fabric invite, and the gucci is about as posh as it can get. But goodness you reminded me that I stopped halfway through the first book and have to restart reading.

  18. I say you completely deserve to go and enjoy. I too was very very excited to get an invite to Daydream nation (but sadly not Gucci)

  19. Am I Daydreamin’ or what Susie…?? I got the Daydream invit, but didn’t get that it was an invit… So, threw out everything except the poetic scarf-like Good Night Deer square, which I liked so much, but didn’t quite know how to interpret… Good Night Deers… It’s past midnight, in Paris ! XXG:-)
