I can lament all I want about my lack of natural talent in the way of the creative fields (art, crafts, fashion) etc, but in the end I’m happy to be an admirer and a talker-upper of what I see. I may not be able to emulate them but I can sure as hell praise them in a royal-icing-sickeningly OTT way. Take Hildur Bj√∂rk Yeoman who comes from Iceland. She’s exactly the same age as me (about 7 days older…) but her bio is far more impressive in the way that creativity was born right from the start. She was practically blind as a child and so thew herself into drawing paper dolls and made clothes for her Barbie dolls. I played with cardboard boxes and smeared my mother’s Olay cream all over the walls.
She turned her back on a science course and headed for fashion, working for Jonathan Saunders and Yazbukey along the way and then started her own atelier shortly after. Then she became the creative director for the brand Brigitte Bird which sadly has now lost financial backing. So this wonderful SS08 collection which I imagine were Pinocchio a girl this is what she would be kitted out in, will alas never be sold. With all the sweet covered buttons, playsuits, ruffles and long triangular collars, it doesn’t surprise me that the source of inspiration was Victorian children’s clothing and pre-Rafaelite paintings. I can’t sigh over the pics for too long though as it won’t be going into production….
As a possessor of much natural talent, Hildur is currently busying herself with her illustration work for an accessories brand called Thelma. This is a case whereby the illustrations are selling it in to me more so than the photographs. I love the sort of sultry femmes who are also girly-looking that Hildur depicts in her illustration work. How much I long to dot myself with rouge and wear incredible eyelashes as well as wearing Thelma’s headpieces after seeing these?
It doesn’t end there as Hildur is embarking on her own range of hand crochet bags as illustrated below which will be stocked at Systur, a quirky lingerie boutique in Reykjavik.
No, this isn’t an embittered post about what I lack but rather a celebration of those that had it in them all along. I’m quite content in being a mediocrity as long as there are those that are elevated above that for me to harp on about…

Very interesting post, it’s great to find out about new things. Those clothes are very, very nice, I like the colours as well
What fun pieces. The colors are fabulous as well.
The last two photos are just adorable and I love that futuristic take on the chignon.
Those hair ornaments are so retro-Parisienne…LOVE THEM!
Oh, my.. I¬¥m from Iceland and had no idea about her and her work. That clearly shows how the wrong people get all the attention here. I¬¥ll be waiting until she gets famous in the big world, and then Icelanders might start paying attention to her…
Rather interesting pieces. I like that they have this innocent yet quirky touch to them 🙂
Susie, the bit about the cardboard boxes and Olay has made my day. What a great visual!
Hildur is wonderfully talented and talent like that won’t stay under wraps for long–amazing that she can move in so many interesting and exciting directions.
yes, it’s so true some people are born with talent and drive that starts producing wonderful things at a preternatural age most of us are not so lucky…but I always tell myself and this is not out of spite for the gifted but more to encourage myself, slow and steady wins the race because I’m definitely a turtle in a world of rabbits.
beautiful drawings… i’m always amazed on how an island with a tiny population can house so much talent.
I hope that since I’m the same age as you and Hildur and have yet to accomplish my dreams (or even get anywhere near them) it ok- I feel that we are all so young that we are only just beginning to show our promise…
That first dress was gorgeous! The lovely buttons (Can you tell I like buttons? Hehe)and combination of the blue/grey and caramel work so well!
I love the clothes and the illustrations–a truly diverse talent. Surely it is a natural talent to be able to recognize good designers/art when you see it.
Alas! That button-down gray bodysuit with the long pointed collar could have gotten almost weekly wear to work… even assuming we’d have been able to get the line in the US.
i think your eye is so fabulous, it makes you as good as the crafty and talented people. See there are levels, and it doesn’t matter what you do, some people stand in the same spot for how much they understand what they’re surrounded by.
Vote for susie! lool
lovely love from mexico city

I love the spare and subtle use of color… and want every one of those hair pieces.
it makes me sad that these pieces will never make it to fruition. great collection overall, but the last four totally would have become basics for me. thanks 🙂
Glad ppl are loving Hildur and her many skills….
Marta: Iceland is STUFFED full of talent from what I’ve seen…
Suzanna: Olay is so good for gunking on walls…
fauxfauxreal: Good choice of phrasing… I tell myself that too..
laurakitty: Exactly…we are so young… talent comes in many guises of course.
chicmarnacita: Awww…shucks…!
I adore Hildur’s bags, they are just sooo expensive. If I remember correctly, her poodle bag is retailing at about 50-60.000 ISK.
And sadly, the Systur boutique closed their doors about a year ago.
They cost 33.000 isk, wich I think is a fair price.
They are after all handmade.
