Wash Out

I watched a disgusting amount of ‘What Not to Wear/How to Look Good Naked/Undress the Nation‘ type shows when I went home to enjoy the privileges of Sky (the joys of cack TV are not to be dismissed!) and the one thing I noticed was that the presenters Lisa Butcher & Mica Paris (seriously…Mica Paris…RANDOM?!)/Gok Wan/Trinny & Susannah will always criticise the makeover victims (they are TV’s poor lambs I tells ya…) and their old wardrobes for being drab and washed out.  ‘I want you to be LOUD and PROUD!’.  They’ll look at grey with disgust and say ‘Urgh what is that?  Get rid of it!’ and god forbid there’s something pale and interesting hiding in their closets.

For the new season though, I think I’d rather be a wallflower than a loud and proud ‘WO-MAN’ (that’s how they say that word on those TV shows…).   I seem to have accumulated a decent amount of dusky pinks, rubbed-out blues, heather greys and a general palette of colours that look like they have come out of a washing machine accident.  It’s not exactly pastel either as I’m not keen on looking like a Mothercare advert.  The colours have undertones of grey which gives the look a bit of murkiness.  Without making it too wishy-washy, I have dug out my various treated light denim skirts again in pale blue and grey to make the outfits more robust.  I’m sure Lisa/Gok/T&S would not give their seal of approval to these hues of wash-out but then again I’m not a ‘bangers and arse’ kinda girl either (watch How to Look Good Naked and you’ll know what I mean….!).

  1. i love the light wash denim with the dusty colours, perfect. and for once i wish the makeover shows would feature someone who didnt have huge boobs! whats all this apple/pear stuff??

  2. These programmes that like to make a mockery of others are disgraceful. Bordieu labels this ‘symbolic violence’, an attack against those who do not have the correct ‘taste’ and therefore do not wear the ‘correct’ clothes and therefore are made a mockery of. It is often the working class/underclass that are victims of this, hence the label given to them ‘Chav’.
    Selena.

  3. i love these faded hues too- you’re still playing with color, but in a feminine and subtle way. your outfits are wonderful!

  4. I love the muted colours, they’re perfect for days when you don’t really want the world to notice you. And the spider socks are awesome, as always (I never realised they were over the knee before).

  5. god, what a sight for sore eyes, given the current slew of christmassyness, sequins and sequins and sequins and black. This kind of colour pallette is sometimes so comforting and refreshing, like the smell of warm fresh bread.

  6. really sweet. dusty, murky colours make me think of nice and thoughtful people, and everybody feels that way about themselves sometimes, so blehh to those stupid shows.

  7. How to look good naked? Just when I thought nothing could shock me anymore… I love those colours! And it’s the only way I want to wear pink.

  8. that denim looks awesome on you! where did you get the sandals for that outfit?
love the spiderweb socks and the pastel colours of course…

  9. I love them all(your pics). I think these TV Shows are never intended for people like you though and if the people who make the show know as they should about fashion, they’ll know you always look fantastic. 😉
But for the people that appear in the show, they need to go back to basics, (there are women wearing a 38B bra instead of a 36KK!!!) and I am guessing that they can only dress them up in certain shops.
You should watch the Dutch version and cry. Can’t even describe it…maybe I should write it on my own blog actually…haha.

  10. The sandals are from the first Giles for New Look collection…!
The socks (which everyone thought were tights…) are by Eley Kishimoto and are by far my fave socks in the world…
    Glad this wash-out post hasn’t been a total…. wash-out (ho ho ho…)

  11. Chh, I never watch these programmes.
I used to occaisonally and would always ffel a little vulnerable afterwards!
Trinny and Susannah especially have a nack for making me feel uninspired and stripped of my individualism.
At least Gok Wan seems to have the aim to actually make women feel good about themselves rather than T&S who must take the job to fill a void in their rich housewife lifestyles.
They just have a samey formula, surely?
A kaftan to hide lumps and bumps, bootcut jeans to “accentuate leg length” and a necklace to show off “tits”.
I’m glad that you’ve veered away from their advice, these concoctions are beautifully pretty and perfect to get into the mood for spring.
Gosh, I feel so much better after that, sorry to use your blog to vent!

  12. Never liked the American version of this show, although it must be said that some of the “victims” were so wretchedly bedraggled or just plain odd (a man who wore skirts and didn’t own knickers) that anything was an improvement. Even blinding colors.
I’ve always liked a dusty rose and have not though of it as being washed out.
These looks have quite a good deal of charm in them. They are evocative of a well-loved children’s tale, and not of High Street proscriptions.

  13. I’ve never seen the British versions, but the American version of Your Closet Sucks, or We Hate Your Clothes makes me want to yarf. The hosts are two perky twats who thrash people’s individual style and replace it with Banana Republic. Sorry, but I’m not taking style tips from a man who wears the same blazer/shirt/jeans combination every single show.

  14. They all look amazing, deffinitly do not listen to their advice.
It’s not fair that you look so good in highwaisted things, I just can’t get away with it, my torso is too short for my legs.

  15. I will never get tired of dusky pinks, regardless of my love for the American version of ‘What Not to Wear.’

  16. i <3 those programmes! gok wan = the greatest. also i loovee those shoes on the bottom left. the shoots or whatever. totally yum.
