The Dangerous Discount

It’s not particularly chic or graceful but I’m a discount voucher hoarder.  If there’s a voucher out and about in magazines, it’s gonna be cut out, kept in the wallet and then the buy-by date will come and go and it will still be crumpled up in my wallet.  I can’t keep track of how many All Saints, H&M, Warehouse, Oasis, Faith vouchers I’ve kept (thank you Grazia) for no reason other than for the slight possibility that I may pass by Warehouse and spy something and ta-da, I have a 20% voucher for said item.  Of course, that has never happened as Warehouse just isn’t one of those places that I casually pass by.

However, in the latest issue of Elle, a 20% Urban Outfitters is there for the taking and I’m determined not to let this one slip by.  I do have to beware of my slight crazy mentality when using a discount voucher.  In my head, somehow, it makes sense to buy heaps of things at once for the sake of using that discount.  Buying one thing and saving a couple of quid seems pointless to me.  However, tot all this lot up and you get a mega saving.  When it goes into treble figures, the grin gets Cheshire-cat big.

GRAND TOTAL = !!¬£930.99!! MINUS 20% (!!¬£186.19!!) = ¬£744.80 (I’m ignoring the figures in small letters…)

Of course, whilst I’m busy choosing and there are pound signs ker-ching-ing in my eyes at the prospect of a chunky discount, I’m forgotting that I’ll be paying the consequences two weeks later when I’m seeing whether I can survive on a week of mouldy Ryvita and Tesco’s economy beans.  If nobody warned you about the aforementioned dangers of a discount voucher, I’ll live to tell the tale… whilst scraping beans out of a can with a plastic fork…

  1. I was excited when i saw the discount in my issue of Elle and raced to the site but alas theres nothing I really want that much. Urban outfitters is seriously lacking at the moment. I went to the Oxford Street Branch last thursday and again, there is just nothing there to tempt me. And lets not even go there with how overpriced it all is…

  2. I can’t believe u spent ¬£700 over because of a 20% off voucher!! 😛

  3. Cordelia I wrote in jest! As if… it was just to illustrate my THINKING mentality when it comes to vouchers…. i.e. the bigger the discount the better…more warped thinkings…

  4. We dont get vouchers in our magazines!
Also, if you are interested in those Fornarina jeans. They are coated with this slick thing, that makes it feel well, really sticky. Like a coat of car oil. It is really weird, and takes time getting used to. But they look nicer than they feel. Most of the denim this season was skinny and slightly tapered.

  5. Oh you know you can always borrow my discount cards don’t you?! x
PS Kate Bush is a goddess – Hounds of Love is my fave album of hers.

  6. The “coupons” as we call them are in Lucky Magazine. They’ve had Urban Outfitters in there a few times.
I’m just bent because the American store/website does not have the white pocket skirt!

  7. can anyone give me the discount code?
i’m in Singapore and my version of Elle doesn’t have that discount code! and i really wanna get lots of stuff..

  8. dude. that felt hat and the bw shoes. our uo sucks compared to that of the uk.

  9. I tried on the white version of the applique tank in UO a few weeks ago, and although it looks nice on the website the fit was really strange in real life. It came up very short (and I’m not tall by any means) and quite wide. Not at all like the fit on the model. Shame, because it looks amazing.

  10. From those photos alone, it seems fair to say that UK Urban Outfitters outranks its American counterpart. I’m envious. The U.S. stores are currently full of hideous ’80s-inspired items like acid-washed jeans and Cosby Show sweaters.

  11. You, my good madam, are a fashion baller. I’ll admit that I get just as bad when some of my favourite stores have sales though. Extreme restraint is needed to buffer the eventual descent into poverty.

  12. I was in London last thursday because of an open day at CSM and I did some shopping afterwards. I was so dissapointed about Urban Outfitters. I mean, they definitely had some nice stuff, but it was crazily overpriced. Same goes for Topshop, although to a lesser degree..

  13. the uk site has *a lot* of stuff that the american site doesn’t wow.
