If there was ever a shop owner that was instantly recognisable for me by their signature/trademark style, it would be Pippa Brooks. Her presence in the London Soho area is pretty established seeing as she’s gone through so many shop ventures with her business partner Max Karie. First it was a ‘SHOP’ at the Bar Italia Launderette on Frith Street. Then it was the basement ‘Shop’ of 4 Brewer Street that first opened my eyes to ‘indie’ boutiques when I stumbled in there aged 14 but was too scared/skint to buy anything. Then that evolved into ‘The World According To…’ which is now closed I believe…
I think this has something to do with Pippa and Max concentrating on their latest venture, Shop at Maison Bertaux which Style Bubble regular readers will know as the place where Susie can indulge in her two passions – buying pretty clothes and stuffing her face with cakes. I’m pretty much always up for the Eley Kishimoto, Sonia Rykiel Bijoux and APC they stock in the cute pink walled basement (clothes wrapped up in a cake box…’nuff said).
Back to Pippa’s style though. I love the way she crosses genres mixing punk, pin-up, rockabilly, Harajuku and Paris-chic which all results in a style that is pure Pippa. Hence why I easily spot her out of a crowd. Most importantly, it all doesn’t look overly considered. As well as being a shop owner, a full-time mother, she is also in a band All about Eve Babitz. No wonder she looks like she’s having so much fun in her pics (note the killer smile which I could never perfect…). I was tired of gawping after Pippa’s outfits everytime I saw her so I took a chance and Pippa very kindly snapped seven days of her outfits with a brief accompanying diary of fun-fun-fun!
<<Day 1
I was DJ’ing at The Look presents‚Ķat the Lost Society. I‚Äôm wearing my second had Cacharel dress which is from the 70‚Äôs, I got it from my favourite shop in Waterloo ‚ÄúWhat the Butler Wore‚Äù and I‚Äôm wearing it with my cork-heeled
platforms, also second hand but bought off Stevie Stewart from Bodymap. I did my hair in this style because I noticed a bulging vein on the side of my head! Yikes!
Because The Look is always such a good party I rushed out of the flat with a tiny hangover and without having any
breakfast….always a good excuse to have a croissant at Maison Bertaux before goiong underground to my boutique Shop at Maison Bertaux. I’m wearing the Shopgirl Grace Jones T-shirt I designed when we were at the other shop on Brewer St, Vivienne Westwood striped cotton skirt I think I bought about 7 or 8 years ago, Westwood shoes and Cutler and Gross pink sunglasses.
Don’t know if this is a cheat because they’re not my clothes but we went on a buying appointment at Sonia by Sonia Rykiel and this was my favourite look de jour. A bit of a nautical theme, which will be available next spring.
Our new delivery of APC came in and I was so excited to slip into this almond slithery sailor dress! I’ve wanted this for 6 months! I was wearing my Sonia Rykiel T bar shoes and probably did 3 or 4 costume changes throughout the day! When you’ve been looking at the same summer clothes for months on end it’s so exciting when the new season
comes rolling in!
Another of the new APC dresses, this one with a tiny faded sprig all over it, walking the fine line between nighty and dress – my favourite kind! I was excited that there was a nip in the air so I could look a bit autumnal in my Westwood pirate boots!
The day after our shoot for the website my feet were aching so much from standing around in my high heels so I decided to give my feet a treat in my geisha-inspired “flats” they’re like walkimg barefoot! I got them in Tootsie Plohound in NYC about 8 years ago. New white APC gathered shirt and second hand crepe skirt.
Then it was the weekend and I went with my boyfriend and sons to Kent to Nanny Vans and had a ride on her horse Charlie! I wasn’t expecting to be cantering around a field so was wearing a second hand silk dress, Sonia apple belt and pumps! Not practical at all but what the hey!

This is fantastic. I love all the dresses.
