There are many bags that ‘aren’t a plastic bag’

¬£5 ‘it’ bags?  Whatever next.  As expected the Anya Hindmarch charity ‘I’m not a plastic bag’ was sold out at stores within hours and the one online stockist also crashed due to the overwhelming demand.  UK people will now have to wait until the 25th April to scour the supermarket Sainsbury’s for it.

However, I somehow feel the message of the bag is being lost.  There are canvas bags a-plenty, other than the Anya Hindmarch one and I pick them up willy nilly at all sorts of random places because they ARE so damn useful.  Groceries, books, my various outfit changes in the day and also stuffing my buys of the day seeing as I hate the way plastic bags leave marks on my arms.  Kingdom of Style suggested some lux alternatives to the bargainous Anya Hindmarch one but I’m still in thrifty-mode (payday hasn’t knocked on my door yet…) so it’s Etsy, my favourite hunting ground, to the rescue!

Russian Dolls // Red Birdy // Horses (reminds me of Chloe circa the Stella McCartney years..)

  1. the point of having a reusable bag is surely lost when you’re lured out to buy a brand new one – ladies! you know you already have plenty of bags that serve this purpose! the production of the hindmarch bag will have used gallons of water and pumped out plenty of CO2 i’m sure… %-) so i hope those with the exclusive bag keep using them until they can be used no more (else they may as well have been plastic)

  2. the charm/point of the “I am not a plastic bag” bag is that it makes a statement, literally. it calls the attention of other people, saying, “hey, I’m doing something, why don’t you?”
at least, that’s what I find appealing about it. maybe it’s just a trend thing, but it’s certainly not a bad one. I’m going to make my own that says something similar, because, again, that’s the point I’m taking away from it.

  3. I don’t own a shopper at all, so buying the Anya one, or any other, will be my FIRST one, which is precisely the point she’s trying to make, therefore for me it’s worked – I will now try and use less plastic bags buy buying a re-useable shopper.

  4. I want the Abe Lincoln one. I wish I could silk screen. I would have a rack full of ridiculous totes, one for each day of the week. Perhaps I could put a different type of dinosaur on each one, or the Periodic Table of the Elements. Someday…

  5. What I really hate is how they’re going for ¬£100+ on eBay when they’ll be on sale on the 25th – it’s ridiculous! That’s the problem with producing so many bags – I agree with sopchan’s comment. The message seems to have gotten lost – it’s now just the latest must-have style item (just like the designer/highstreet collaborations). And it definitely won’t stop women from buying more…and more… Cynic I may be…but ¬£5 to buy into a designer brand? Who’s going to miss a chance like that?

  6. Loving the horses. Hating the fact somebody has made me think twice about buying another bag (see coment above!!!)

  7. I am asking for 50 people to join my pledge as I continue to be fed up, infact veeerrrry fed up with the amount of plastic bags hanging from trees, caught in fences and generally blowing around in our streets, caught in gutters and the edges of roads. If trees were human they would be crying out for help, as they are being strangled by the things. I would be very grateful if you could support my pledge to hunt out plastic bags an arts action at
    http://www.pledgebank.com/plasticbaghunt
“I will collect as many plastic bags as possible, caught in trees, bushes, fences ect and re-use or recycle but only if 50 other people will do the same.”

25 people have signed up, 25 more needed

  8. What do you think of these reusable shopping bags? http://www.myownbag.com?
I make them in San Francisco. I’m hoping to redefine what a shopping bag looks like. Something stylish, sturdy, easy to carry.
    Love the fashion blogs.

  9. I’m new at this site! Hope to be here for a while 🙂
