Full Circle

You know, I just can’t seem to shake the Napoleon Dynamite line ‘I like your sleeves.  They’re real big.’  That film reference seems to all over the catwalks for autumn winter 2007-8.  Some have gone for the big shoulders into sleeves combo.  Some have taken the volume down and gently sloped the shoulders so you end up creating a circular sillhouette.  If you’re up for creating a perfect circle on the top, then look no further than Matthew Ames who has been developing this sillhouette in his rigourously shaped collection from spring summer 2007 and also again in his autumn winter 2007-8 collection.  Going through my Labels, Labels, Labels category, I am a little ashamed that I don’t feature more American-born designers but Ames is a little different from the norm, being the first American to become a finalist at the prestigious Hy√®res International Festival of Fashion and Photography in 2004 and he also trained at the Antwerp Royal Academy.  With such a strong shape, it’s good that everything is reined in with the strict lines and colour use.  If you’re not keen on looking rotund on the bottom, then perhaps take it up to the top!

  1. oooh – i actually really like the second dress – though the fact i have much bigger boobs than the model would present a problem with that kind of cut… the fourth is also very interesting, though i’d prefer it without the roll neck…
