C.R.A.Z.Y.

When people use the C word to describe style, I often think they are misusing it.  To set the record straight here is my personal definition of the word presented as a ‘Crazy’ reply to the very very annoying Jaguar Gorgeous ad campaign.  You will see that what is conceived as crazy is really just calculated mess and having fun in my calculated mess of a world where I have lots and lots of things to do that is orderly in a timetable and where my things are strewn all over my room but I know exactly where to find them all.

Gorgeous deserves your immediate attention. Crazy deserves lots of berets with veils attached to them.

Gorgeous makes effort look effortlessCrazy is not just random and there IS some effort involved like travelling to Prague for a bit of lace or lining up all my long opera gloves to see which length would work best with the short sleeved aetex sporty jacket.

Gorgeous stays up late and still looks gorgeousCrazy stays up late finding out what Gorgeous is wearing in all the magazines and then hopefully from Gorgeous, Crazy will interpret that with something extra.

Gorgeous has no love for logicCrazy actually does have logic – just a messy, varied, sometimes non-sensical logic.

Gorgeous loves fastCrazy loves big plastic gems/jewels stuck on shoes, dresses, everywhere!

Everyone cares what Gorgeous saysNo-one wants to openly point out Crazy when Crazy is present, sort of like the pink elephant but in lots of layers and big mittens.

Gorgeous gets in everywhereCrazy goes everywhere, looking for more crazy.

Gorgeous can’t be ordinary even if it triesCrazy thinks ordinary can also be misused.

Gorgeous pays for itself in the first five secondsCrazy pays for £3 vintage pumps as well as £300 Miroike booties.

Gorgeous doesn’t care at all what others are doingCrazy cares on one level but not on another.

Gorgeous was born that wayCrazy was nurtured by a liberal family and also is the result of being a mediocrity.

Gorgeous trumps everythingCrazy doesn’t want to trump anyone/thing.

Gorgeous is worth itCrazy is worth picking out a metallic brightly coloured quilted pencil skirt from Greenwich Market and pairing it with silver leather driving gloves and a chewed up old cashmere sweater.

  1. suzie you are so amazing!
    im such a gusher
but really you have it to a t.

  2. Gorgeous is classy – Crazy mixes classic with funky with prissy with fresh with a hint of morbid imagination… and completely turns it out.
Gotta love these…Definitely going to print them and stick them on my mirror for when I’m lacking inspiration…

  3. It seems everyone is ‘K-e-r-r-r-a-Z-Y’ these days, which to my mind makes it sooooo not crazy.
Restraint is the new crazy ;-), it’s much harder to do in terms of still looking individual and stylish.
‘Mish mash’ outfits are easy to put together, and are everywhere these days. The crazy Nu rave look is also such an easy formula too, it’s like dot to dot dressing.

  4. Ah, apologies – its ‘Pop Hit’ shot by Nick Knight from UK Vogue March 2007 – the one with Daria Werbowy on the cover.
The point is here…. to say that actually…. it is not crazy you’re seeing, and when people use that word with me, that is not what it is. I’m not JUST about the random or mish-mash. If there is any element of crazy in me, its because I like different styles… one day could be severely minimal, the other day is not……
So you see, I contradict myself by defining crazy when in the end as Lol B said, it ends up not being crazy at all……
Just as that Gorgeous ad sets out to define Gorgeous but actually ends up sounding laughable when you hear that William Dafoe voiceover….

  5. Susie, it’s obvious you don’t dress to be ‘K-e-r-a-zy’, I’ve checked out your style diary many times. You seem to be passionate about clothing and use the art of dressing up to express yourself and your different moods. Your have an eagle eye for interesting and cute detail.
Did you have a mammoth dress up box as a kid? I can just imagine you in your mammas high heels:-)
You appear to dress to please yourself and your whims(which is rare and refreshing) , you are drfinately not ‘c.r.a.z.y contrived’ I hope you didn’t think I was insinuating that in my previous post!

  6. These two are my favorite:
