There are some multi-usage garments that work and some that don’t. Boots attached with side snap purses don’t. Bodywear bags that are worn as a dress do. This is the first proper photo that I have seen of the new collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and Mandarina Duck, named ‘Y’s Mandarina.’ I love the way that the bag is not just just treated as an standalone object stuck on a dress but rather the components of dress and bag have been intertwined with each other in perfect symmetry. What could have easily been a commercially lucrative collab i.e. Yohji sticking his name on some normal Mandarina Duck bags has in fact turned into a collection very much within the creative domain/control of Yamamoto. In fact, there is very little Mandarina Duck evident here apart from the basic premise of a bag and perhaps the choice of materials, which suits me fine as a balance tipped towards Yohji Yamamoto is no bad thing. The collection launched during the menswear shows in Milan and Paris and should be on sale within the next few months – expect higher than Mandarina Duck prices though. But looking at this bag/dress, that is certiably more Yohji dress than Mandarina bag and for that, I can be price-tolerant.

Now that my handbag just got stolen for the second time in 6 months this sounds just like the ticket. But I do hope this bag/dress will come in different colours, though…
It’s hard to tell where one begins and the other ends…perrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect.

Yes! I saw this dress — in a gorgeous bright red — while looking at pages to be proofed at my internship and absolutely fell in love! Not only is it such a cool — and practical — concept, it’s aesthetically pleasing and looks comfy. Ahh, that Yohji.

There’s a great shot of this bag in the new surface magazine. It’s ergonomically designed too!
