Faking the Fringe

You know for sure that I am bored out of my mind when I start playing with my hair as I’m pretty low-maintenance with my mane.  It’s pretty much long and shaggy with a poke in the eyes fringe.  I don’t blow dry it – it’s literally wash and go with maybe a spritz of sea salt spray to make it a bit scrunchy.

This annoys my Hong Kong friends to no end as they love to do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to their hair.  One style that sticks out in particular is the faux fringe/very low side parting.  I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this style in Hong Kong fashion magazines.  (The pic to the left is a crap example…chucked away all my HK mags).  I suppose if you are after Irina Lazareneau-style heavy bangs, this is like the poor man’s version if you’re too scared to go for the full-on bang chop.  However, it does look kinda funky when you take that front section and sweep it over and then push up the grips so that you make a kind of hair bump to the side of your head, kind of like a less severe quiff.  As you probably know, I favour side pony tails so this is a way of sprucing up my usual side pony tail.  I would also recommending trying this when your hair is a bit grubby as freshly washed hair makes it too slippery and all you’ll get is a front section that keeps falling down.

A boring Sunday’s worth of hair-play….

  1. I think a fringe would look great, but the fringe you have on in those pics are very heavy

  2. cute!
    you remind so so much of a friend of mine in those pics!
    lovely to read you are gaining recognition for the blog. x

  3. I’m completely useless at hairstyles, but could you tell me how you got your side pony to pouf out like that (Top row-fourth pic)? Whenever I try side ponies, they lie limp and flat, rather like in the last pic of yours.

  4. I have Irina-esque hair, although not quite as long, and my blunt fringe is such high maintainance! I have to keep trimming it every week!

  5. Andrea, try back-combing your hair to give it volume and use something like Bumble & Bumble Surf spray to rough it up a bit.

  6. wow that’s totally awesome. can you give us a step-by-step photolog perhaps? i can’t get my head around how you get the hair to stay put!

  7. Might do a photo by photo instructions but it’s really quite simple. Just sweep your hair right over from one side and then push it up just above the corner of your eyes with some kirby grips. The more you push it up, the more it will poof. If your hair is fine and lacking in volume, use some volumising spray beforehand and don’t try this on freshly-washed hair!

  8. I have a widow’s peak (beauty’s peak in Mandarin, which I prefer!)– it’s virtually impossible to sweep my fringe to one side without having the fringe bounce back.

  9. you’re cute, but i don’t think this is a good look for anyone. it’s much too heavy, and reminiscent of those bucket hairstyles that asians had back in the 50s, when their grandmothers literally got a bucket and wacked the hair off in a blunt line. O_o;;
    you would look nice with a real fringe, though.

  10. I think it looks cool. ive just got a sweeping fringe at the min but i’m realy bored of it and sick of looking about 16 when i’m actually 23! 🙂 so i’m thinking about getting a full fringe but with layers in so it’s not too heavy. I have just below shoulder length hair and sometimes wear it wavy..Can anybody help me,do you think this will work?
