Style is Everywhere

When people say they are living in a ‘fashion Siberia’ (i.e. a place where style is non-existent and people aren’t that into fashion), I’m always a little suspicious seein as I’m eternally optimistic that style exists EVERYWHERE.  Even in a small town with a population of 1000 in deepest Wales, there will be 5 people out of that 1000 that have incredible style.

Now if you’re an avid blog reader (which I hope you are!), you probably frequent the usual suspects of the street style blog.  The Satorialist and the Face Hunter are two big fat juicy prime examples.  You might also know of the London Street Fashion site and Style Arena if you’re into Japanese streetstyle.  Yes, the pictures are all great but finding stylish people in New York, Paris, London and Tokyo is not such a hardship (not that the people who snap these pictures aren’t dilligent in their efforts!) and to some extent, being in those cities, you kind of get it handed to your plate.

Which is why it’s cool to see streetstyle pictures from more far-flung places.  Probably a lot of people living outside of Russia, including myself, might not see the country as a hotbed of style and might even have bad connontations with regards to Russian style.  Certainly, when I was in Moscow, all I seemed to find were women who wore a lot of make up, who were swaddled in labels (fake and real) and from what I have seen, Russian socialites living in London unfortunately also conform to that image.

However, this site Look At Me has some excellent pictures which has completely opened up my eyes to streetstyle in Russia.

Street style blogs and sites are popping up all over the place, almost as if to say ‘Hey don’t discount us!  We have stylish people too!’ and I’m glad for it.  Soon, no-one can claim they come from ‘fashion Siberia’ as avid streetstyle bloggers are covering the globe.  I’m now waiting to see looks from South Africa, New Zealand and Mexico…. I know you’re out there!

  1. Have to say I’m not really convinced by that London blog at all – or at least their modus operandi is different from all the rest. They just photograph people in standard clothes, maybe a bit ‘urban’ styled, rather than anyone really making an effort or taking any risks, which is what’s actually interesting to look at.

  2. Yeah, there really isn’t a proper London street style blog at the moment…. not like The Satorialist or Facehunter anyway….
I wish I could spend all my time taking pictures of stylish people…as you can see, Bubble Cam is languishing before my very eyes!

  3. Hi, i’m from mexico and i want a site for the street style here too, mmmm i think if i started one?? always i see girls and boys with a lot of style and very cool clothes, in my city Guadalajara, and in the Mexico city too.

  4. What a great site, thanks for sharing! I love the jeans that the girl in the bottom left is wearing, what a great fit.

  5. Thankyou for posting that website , I like to frequent the street chic forums of thefashionspot.com , they’re always interesting. I think Hel-Looks , and the Satorialist are my favourites though. x

  6. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should check out http://www.hel-looks.com/
It’s a site with street style from Helsinki! I’m from Canada but I still find it intriguing. Lots of them are kind of gothic which is definitely not my thing but every now and then there are a few jems!

  7. Gosh ! It’s so great 2B recognized instantly…! I barely had the chance to say boo – as in boo 2 a goose – when your blog flashed up all my details! What I was about to confirm is that like a lot of pple I’m a Sartorialist slash Face Hunter addict, but the effect is beginning to “wear off” – I prefer a varied blog like yours that does occasional digi-pix. By the way, I shall be “en vacances” in Notting Hill from August 11 to 28. Is there a chance that we could meet – as I’d like to mention you in my Paris Voice trends column… ?? mobile 00 33 (0)6 70 79 84 50

  8. im from nz, and i can see why someone wouldn’t do a street style blog here. if you were to do one person every day, you would have used up all the stylish people within 6 months. that said, i think we have a growing sense of style. maybe.

  9. I really liked the “fashion Siberia” thingy. I have actually met girls from Siberia and that was very… 80s.
Anyway someone might think that Iceland was a typical “fashion Siberia” but it is not. It´s really, really high fashioned country and people tend to go their own ways. Heaps of vintage clothes and jewelery is a big craze here. But I think because of the small population (300.000) I think a blog wouldn´t work. Obviously.

  10. I’m in New Zealand and most people here are so afraid to look different.
I usually get dressed and then take off a few things so I don’t get funny looks *guilt*
