My little sneaky run to the Alexander McQueen sample sale yesterday proved fruitful in several ways. I got to see the very elegant Roccoco style Westminster room at The Old Sessions House in Farringdon where the sale was held. I learnt about the Vivienne Westwood sample sale which was a tip-off from a fashion insider (gotta love communal changing rooms – a great place to natter away!). Oh…and I got this black satin cape thing from the 2003 A/W collection for £40.
My colleagues were baffled as to why I didn’t get the coveted McQueen staples like pencil skirts, perfectly cut trousers and little tight blazers. Staples they maybe but not things I get a lot of wear out of and for me, I like to buy unique things that are interesting in their design – things that you can’t get on the high street (and because I can get perfectly good pencil skirts, blazers and trousers on the high street).
I know McQueen went all out with the Hitchcock heroine look for his A/W05-06 collection and I am aware it’s very much spring/summer now but hey, I don’t believe in trends dying fast – plus, this outfit might quite handy on chilly nights. This is my dysfunctional take on the Hitchcock heroine thang inspired by my new purchase!
Black wool beret, Zakee Shariff cream wool dress, TS Boutique black satin and sequin panelled skirt, Topshop black suede round toe pumps, H&M white belt, cream pom pom trim as belt and of course – Alexander McQueen black satin cape

Love this look, what a cape!!!
That cape is gorgeous! I think it still has that McQueen touch. My favorite Hitchcock movie is Notorious and Ingrid Bergman looks incredible in it. I just bought a pair of 30s vintage gloves for Hitchcockian outfit inspiration.
I’m not into capes, I just don’t see the use for them. For me they fall into the same category as ponchos.
i agree with your policy of buying the interesting, well-designed pieces. In fact, I have problems parting with money for basics sometimes, which means that I find myself short on the pieces that tie all the eclectic stuff together.
You seem to do well on both accounts !(I remember you extolling the virtues of uniqlo for buying the building block pieces . . ?)
When are you going to show us how you store all your clothes? I am so nosy . . .
As for capes, I adore them and your new one is absolutely wicked. Good choice.
funny, i had just finished watching a hitchcock movie (north by northwest) yesterday when i saw your post!
gorgeous cape, very dramatic!
