I’m not looking at the hats…

Perhaps my head of feathers has taken over the brain slightly but whilst perusing the Burberry Prorsum AW08-9 collection, the thoughts weren’t ‘Oh my god…. what are those tall beanies doing on their heads?’ but ‘Oh my god…oh joy… more feathers!’.  These were the same thoughts when I saw the mens collection.  Though the feathers were used in a more subtle way (my boyf is ever grateful that Bailey had the sensibility not to go overboard with the feathers resulting in say some feathered trousers….), I still had the instant yearnings for those touches of feather on the sweaters and as a bib on a shirt.  Then the womenswear collection came and thankfully, Bailey continued to be inspired by the matchstick people of L.S. Lowry and isolated eccentricity, and so the feathers were pushed further onto dresses and coats in an intricate manner.  Even more grateful am I that Bailey has gone for the sort of feathers that are not to be associated with sickly artificial showgirl costumes but have the heavier, more realistic effect of taxidermy pieces…. which by the by, is something that I’m fascinated by lately.

Whilst I try and track down some fantastic literal crow headpieces by Beddug Wyn Humphreys (yielded nothing on Google) that were featured in the lookbook of Hannah Marshall’s latest collection to demonstrate that I’m not going cuckoo (yes, that was my choice of word there…) when I say I’m into taxidermy, I shall contemplate this Lestat Couture black velvet and coque feather collar capelet which would top off any one of my numerous simple jersey tops and dresses…

  1. Was I the only one that thought Agyness looked especially foolish in that tall beanie?

  2. I love feathers!
Black ones especially, because they sort of take on the appearance of fur (textually) but are much more sleek and funky.
I’ve been loving all of those feather headbands I’ve seen MK Olsen and Mischa Barton sporting lately…I have some feathers from the craft store which are dyed a variety of neon colors…but no idea what do with them! This post has given me soem inspiration, though!

  3. What the heck, I’ve been having a layered feather attach lately too. They have this great dollar store here in Canada called Dollarama, and they sell satin ribbon with feathers stitched all along it. It’s about 2m long for a dollar. I’ve been buying it up like crazy, but there it sits in my drawer. Time to get going on that and make some feathered things!

  4. Lovely. The capelet reminds me of the Anglomania exhibit at the Met a couple of summers back. One of the most striking images, to my eye, was an evening dress on a mannequin with a crow or raven’s head in profile.

  5. The clothes were nice.. but seriously, what WERE those tall beanies doing on the models’ heads?

  6. Eeee, I liked that show! I love feathers, my favourites are peacock feathers because I’m a sucker for just how rich the colours are. And the taxidermy effect here reminds me vaguely of Olivier Theyksens’s early work for his own label..
